Reviewed by Chris Fischer for Readers' Favorite It's every spouse's worst nightmare to be awakened in the middle of the night and told that your loved one is dead. And to find that they've been murdered, well, that just adds another level of grief to the equation. That's exactly the scenario the reader finds in The Apple of My Eye by debut author Mary Ellen Bramwell. Follow the story of Brea Cass, a woman living a lovely life until her husband is killed in a convenience store robbery. After her grief lifts a bit, she is able to look at the situation more critically. Why was Paul, her husband, at the convenience store at all? He had no reason to be there. The more deeply she looks into her husband's death, the more she realizes that something is amiss. And is it possible that the 'something' might have been Paul himself? Did she truly know the man she married? I very much enjoyed The Apple of My Eye. It pulled me in from the start and kept me turning the pages long past the time I should have been asleep. It's difficult to believe that Mary Ellen Bramwell is a first-time novelist. Her skills in developing characters that will stay with the reader long after the book is done are second to none. Her ability to develop scenes and scenarios is so good that you will feel as if you are there, standing next to Brea as things are happening. Any reader who loves good fiction, mysteries, or even romance would enjoy The Apple of My Eye. I recommend this book highly, and look forward to seeing what this very promising author, Mary Ellen Bramwell, has in store for her readers. Loved the cover! Great book!

Is The Apple of My Eye a romance? Yes, but not the ordinary kind. Paul Cass, Brea’s husband and love interest, is murdered shortly after the novel begins. Paranormal romance? Absolutely not. There is no trace of the paranormal in Mary Ellen Bramwell’s novel. Paul is dead and only seen in flash backs. Is The Apple of My Eye a mystery? Yes. In more ways than one. Brea is willing to let he police find her husband’s killer. However, as she reviews what happened, she realizes he was murdered in a place he had no reason to be, at a time he had no reason to be there. The obvious conclusion is that he was having an affair, but Bramwell doesn’t dwell on the obvious, nor does her protagonist. As Brea investigates the murder, she realizes the answers might be darker than she first suspected. Was Paul Cass the man she thought he was, or had she been married to complete, and perhaps monstrous, stranger? While The Apple of My Eye is both a romance and a mystery, it is, more than anything else, the story of one woman looking into herself and the world she lives in, finding ways to cope with things she wouldn’t previously imagined having to deal with, and eventually maturing into a strong, independent woman, strong enough to accept the love and help others offer. An unusual story with a satisfying ending, Mary Ellen Bramwell’s The Apple of My Eye is a book well worth reading.

I loved this book! I liked the beginning, I loved the middle, and the ending blew me away! When I got to the last part of the book, I literally went "NO WAY!" but in a really really good way. The ending was unpredictable and satisfying in ways I didn't know a book could be. The book was very well written and I can't wait to read more from this author!
