Think you know Marni Mann’s writing? Think again! I love Marni Mann’s writing, she’s one of my favorite authors and spins an awesome tale. But, this book took me completely by surprise, I ran a gamut of emotions while reading it. She took my expectations and just ripped them apart. This story started out simply enough but by half way through, it was clear the lines were being blurred, it made me uncomfortable. It made me wonder… is this what I want to read? I can’t tell you anything more than that, because I agree with everyone else. You need to go into this book with an open mind. You have to live it, experience it. Feel it. That’s all I can say without spoilers. And that’s all you can do too. Read this book and make up your own mind.

If you're looking for a story that will blow your mind, that will take you by complete surprise, then look no further than Marni Mann's latest release, The Assistant. Marni Mann is one of those authors I can pick up and read any time, any day. She has always delivered well-written stories about a variety of topics, but The Assistant puts her at the top of the genre. I was totally mind-blown and I don't say that loosely. I felt as though I was walking on eggshells while I was reading, like I was watching a Lifetime movie. I thought one thing, then Marni took me down another path and I was questioning myself and my beliefs. Marni did some pretty darn good plotting for The Assistant and that alone should tell you what a brilliant author she is. If you've never read her before, this is the perfect story for you to start with. The Assistant is what great stories are all about! Read carefully though because every single word is important to the outcome of this story. Brilliant!!

After watching her father slip away due to illness, Jesse Black began to realize just how precious time really is, and that she had been spending way too much time away from her family. She also decided that it might be time for a change. She owns a successful shape wear company which eats up most of her time, which means she has been neglecting her duties at home, so she makes the decision to step away from her business. Now her sole focus will be on her family, and helping her husband further his career, and with his new project. But she can't do that alone, he needs an assistant that can travel with him when he extra needs help, and she needs someone to also chip in around the house and help with their children. Which brings Charlotte to the their doorstep, the moment they welcome their into her home, things start to fall perfectly into place... she is a blessing to them in more ways than one. The Assistant is an emotionally rich tale that will reek havoc on your heart, and rattle you to your core. I don't think there is anything that could have prepared be for what I found between the pages of this one, Ms. Mann completely blindsided me with a few unexpected surprises that had my jaw on the floor, and my heart in my throat. It's hard to write this review without giving away too much, so I will just say this, stay away from the reviews, and go in with an open mind. Let the words lead you, give into the feelings stir up, and embrace the places that they will take you. I absolutely loved this one, the words spoke volumes, the characters found their way into my heart, and the journey was unforgettable. Highly recommend! I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.

This story will suck you in and twist you around spitting you out in another universe. Literally! You will start this story in a haze, go through the emotional roller coaster it is and leave with a dazed look on your face. I had more questions at the end than in the beginning, and believe me, you'll have so many questions reading the story. Jesse and Emery's relationship is rock solid and wonderful. Being best friends since college and still completely in love is what we all strive for in a marriage. In walks Charlotte, but what role does she play? Don't get me wrong, there is still plenty of tension and hot times, even with this married couple! Let me just say the entire story isnt what you think when you pick up the book and it's that much more to walk into blind. This is another show of wickedly awesome story telling. Go in blind and you won't be disappointed. Told in multiple points of view and tenses, past and present 1st and 3rd person perspective. It's all meant to be that way and it all works great. Another must read for 2019 for sure.

The Assistant packed a gut punch like few others! What a unique and emotional story! Jessie and Emery met when they were freshmen in college. They've been married for 23 years and have two children, a daughter who is preparing to leave for college and a twelve year old son. They have both gained high level career success and money is no issue. From the outside looking in, they are the perfect family who are blessed in every way. Jessie's father has recently passed away from a long-term illness and it seems that it has led her to re-prioritize her life. She steps back from her company to spend more time with her family. Meanwhile, Emery has a huge job starting in Boston for the construction of a building he is the architect for. Jessie insists that he hire an assistant so that she doesn't get pulled into that role with her new "free time" as she truly wants to be at home with their kids. The story is told from three points of view: Jessie, Emery and Charlotte (the new assistant). It is helpful to get into each of their heads. I sensed there was something more to the story than I was reading as I flew through the book. As I went, I had various theories bouncing around in my head. When I finally got to the "holy crap" moment, I had only figured out a portion of the twist. I'm hesitant to share any more details because I believe that one should go into this story as blind as possible. Just know that it definitely tugs on the heartstrings throughout....actually it flat out yanks on the heartstrings pretty mercilessly. It is about being a strong woman who loves those around her with a passion like no other. As that person, you make the decisions you think are best, but not everyone may agree. This was an incredibly powerful read. Buckle up and jump in! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

My feelings are all over the place at this moment. I don’t want to give much away but this is a complex and emotional story. I had so many feelings running rampant where I admired then detested then pitied then got all sorts of frustrated with these characters. Jesse and Emery had a marriage that most would envy and that part of the story really was beautiful. Definitely feel this was a great story to go into blind and see where you end up on the final page. It evokes some strong emotions...I promise you that!

I have honestly enjoyed every book I’ve ever read by Marni Mann. But The Assistant may be the best one yet. This book is SO good! It made me feel so many emotions. Jesse is the heroine. She is a strong, independent, and loving woman, wife and mother. I loved her strength and devotion. She and her husband, Emery, are still very much I love after 24 years together. The have two kids that they both love and cherish. Emery is a successful architect that does very well for himself and his family and is very much i love with his wife. This family seems to have it all. But Jesse changes after losing her father to a horrible illness. I can’t say much more because everyone should go into this story blind. It’s very well written and worth every minute it takes to read. I’m definitely recommending it to all of my reading buddies.
