"I've read this book twice now, and I have to say, the second read was eye opening. It is brilliant. There is so much depth, both in the characters and in the plot, full of hidden gems and woven with mastery, that it begins to get into A Song of Ice and Fire territory. Yet whereas the later books in Martin's series took me weeks to finish, I blitzed through The Axe and the Throne so quickly on my first read that I did not fully appreciate it."

"The violence and brutality is vivid. The characters are skillfully developed and each one is flawed in some way that makes them more real and believable. The plot line develops slowly and unpredictability, which I appreciate. I have no idea what lays in store in future chapters. There were instances where I didn't want to continue reading for fear of what my be happening to favored characters...
I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one to be published!"

"Not only does every character have an amazing amount of depth, but there seems to be a genuine surprise around every corner. I recommend this to anybody who is into fantasy, and can't wait for the second book!"

About the Author

M. D. IREMAN was diagnosed as 'left-brained' early in life due to a troublesome affliction: an affinity for math and science. The stigma of his condition followed him from primary school into college, where he earned a scholarship to the Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science. Against the pleas of his doctors, however, he gave up his scholarship to pursue a different calling.

Now a middle-aged recluse with more thumbs than friends, he lives in the mountains of Colorado with his wife, the deer, rabbits, hawks and coyotes.

His hobbies have included everything from tabletop card games and first-gen MMOs to CNC machining.

If you can hang on through the first few chapters you will find yourself hooked and turning pages. This book jumps around a lot between characters. The magic in this book is so small and underwhelming that it does not over power the characters. This is however real gritty fantasy and this book can get real dark at times but there is a solid plot and enough originality to set it apart from other fantasy books out today.

From a fan of Joe Abercrombie, Steven Erikson, Ian c Esselmont and the rest of the Juggernauts...this book is beastly. SUPERB & REFRESHING!

Pros. -Interesting characters. -Page turner. Cons. -Every chapter uses same cliff hanger gimmick. -So many great characters with not enough time spent with any of them. Bottom line. Better than average.

I consider myself a discerning reader and can be somewhat snobbish with pedantic writing, shallow characters and incomplete development. This story has none of those things. Although it took me nearly two thirds of the book to really grasp the underlying trend and start to imagine and anticipate where the storyline was going, the humanness of each characters perspective and insight into human nature was evident from the start and accurately described in the forward. I appreciate most books that inspire new insights into the reasons behind the actions of humanity and this is one of those books. I'm excited to start the second in the series.

Great start to a series. The plot is intricate and is a complex weaving of characters from different cultures and perspectives into a tale of bravery and foolishness. It is slow to develop, but the momentum builds and leaves the reader hungry for more.

A very well written fantasy epic with deep character development. Mr. Ireman does a masterful job of interweaving seemingly unrelated stories and people. I eagerly await the next installment.

A satisfying tale of clashing cultures which is fast moving yet elegant and magical. The author spins a web of unforgettable characters whose disparate worlds become entangled in the threads of tyranny, lust, greed, envy, revenge, love and honor. Burn through the pages if you cannot restrain yourself, but don’t miss the details which will no doubt ignite Book 2.
