It lurks in the shadowy recesses of the French Quarter, among the flickering gas lanterns and Creole courtyards. In the humid, teeming swamps of Barataria. A dark secret. An ancient force. The will to remake one’s history. James Beauregard finds himself at the center of an insidious conspiracy, two hundred years in the making. From the backstreets of New Orleans to the once pirate-infested waters of the Gulf Coast, the race begins to unravel the mystery of The Barataria Key.

Reviewed by Susan Sewell for Readers' Favorite The Barataria Key by JM Richardson is a fast-paced suspense novel. Residents of New Orleans, James Beauregard, and his fiancée, Noelle, are both geology professors. School is out for a week and Tim, James's long-time friend, college roommate, and also a professor, is flying in for a visit. James, Noelle, and Tim are looking forward to a quiet and uneventful spring break, but unfortunately something unprecedented occurs the night before spring break commences. A prominent city icon drops into a sinkhole overnight, and Noelle has been called to look into it. She makes an extraordinary discovery at the site that propels all three of them into a perilous and exciting adventure. A private and covert British organization is seeking to obtain the relics to fulfill their two-hundred-year quest. Because of her discovery, Noelle's life is in jeopardy, and to rescue her the professors embark on a journey to the Maya city of Tikal. With a tantalizing page from the log of the pirate Jean Lafitte in their possession, James and Tim become the unwilling participants of a centuries-old stratagem. Will they arrive in time to save Noelle? Will they be able to subvert a plot that could alter the course of history? The Barataria Key by JM Richardson is an exciting and entertaining, action-filled suspense novel that reaches from New Orleans to deep into the Central American jungles. The story begins during the war of 1812 off the coast of Louisiana. The pirate, Jean Lafitte, possesses and conceals an antiquated Maya relic. A secret organization who coveted the artifact never ceased searching for it. Their obsession intersects and disrupts the main characters' lives. The historical references, characters, and the clandestine group impart an interesting conspiracy aspect to the storyline. As the story unfolded, I was reminded of Dan Brown's, James Rollins's, and Clive Cussler's books. In the same manner, this book is a stimulating story, where danger lurks around every corner. It picks you up from a historical event and takes you on a thrilling ride through the present day. It will delight fans of suspense filled, action packed historical puzzles.
