The Library Journal reviewer seems to have had an ax to grind and, in my view, gave an inaccurate description of Miss Mayhew, who is the daughter of a famous couple and a relative of the Dowager Countess of Withington. She is an eccentric with qualities that are very amusing. She is invited here and there to grand houses because her resemblance to her famous mother and her ability to give an arresting, interpretive performance have given her cachet in high society. It is, therefore, misleading to call her an "itinerant singer". The book is written in a witty and period-authentic style that make the reader really feel present in 1814-1815.The characters in the book are interesting and well-drawn. The story keeps you guessing. It's one of my favorite books !
