The Barren by Jessie Donovan

KELDERAN RUNIC WARRIORS BOOK 2
Vala Yarlen is one of the Barren--an infertile female ostracized from the rest of Kelderan society with others of her kind. So when she's given the opportunity to join the new colony on a human-occupied planet, she jumps at the chance for a fresh start. The only downside is that she has to serve General Thorin Jarrell for the duration of the journey. The cool, distant male goes out of his way to show his disdain of her. But for the chance at freedom, Vala endeavors to endure.

Thorin Jarrell is the general in command of the Kelderan colony transport ship. After years of concealing his true parentage and working his way through the ranks of the army, Thorin will do anything to make his mission a success. What he didn't count on was to find the female assigned to clean his quarters unconscious on the floor. The reason why throws his life into disarray.

Yet as Thorin tries to help Vala recover, the ship encounters trouble. Will they ever reach Jasvar alive? And if so, will Thorin and Vala find a way to be together despite the mountain of obstacles standing in their way?

I love this Sci-Fi series, leave it to Ms. Donovan to make it great! Vala Yarlen a Barren finally got her life's wish, she was given permission to leave her barren Citadel in Kelderan and colonize in Jasvar where her friends Princess Kalahn and the Prince Kason's mate the human Taryn live. There she will be able to be herself eventually, not having to bow to any male as is required of her kind on her planet, she may even be able to someday pilot her own ship. When she boards the Colony Ship bound with 5000 Colonists to Jasvar, she comes face to face with the very serious and stoic General Thorin, why he makes her heart pump she does not know, but a Barren could never hope for a future with such a man. General Thorin has always kept his secret, has had the strength to control his dark side from all, but when he catches a glimpse of Vala the gorgeous white haired Barren he nearly loses control of his well kept secret. But maybe there is still hope for him, if his possession can calm his beast and they are allowed to be together. But more important, will she accept him.

Vala is a kelderan called the Barren they are women that can not have children. Treated like they are shadows and nothing more. What dhe wants is to join the new colony on Jasvar so she can have a full life. General Thorin is a kelderan warrior but he has a secret. He is half Brevan a violent race that the Krlderan's can't stand. He keeps to himself never letting anyone close for fear they find out. But then he meets vala things change znd quickly. I wouldn't given anything away. It's an awesome story that I couldn't put down. I loved the characters and the twists and turns in the story are amazing there is action, drama and spice that made this an great read. Don't miss it. Voluntarily reviewed a copy and I honestly loved it.

I couldn't wait for this book to come out after reading book one. It was all I hoped and more! Thank you, Jessie Donovan, for this wonderful story of love for those who didn't think they could ever have it. I admit I wasn't so sympathetic to Thorin until I read his story. Can't tell you why you'll have to find out for yourself. Vala is a Barren. Literally a labeled class of women who could not bear children, an imperative in their society. They were marked-yes-an actual tattoo on their forehead that identified them to all. No man would ever marry one of them. Vala had an invitation to a new society on a world who could give her chances she'd never have in her own world. Thorin is the General in charge of the transport ship Vala is traveling to her new life. She is assigned to tend to his needs. Although some Barren did more than clean the room, Vala did not. The happening that brought the two together was pure genius. The author made the situation so strong. The choices were no choices at all. It forced them together. Enough said. Learning about the man, having sexual feelings is new to Vala. Can she succumb? When trouble shows can he protect this woman who draws him? The danger is worse because he doesn't know the source. The story line is compelling. The characters captivating. The steam all consuming. The secrets critical. Plan to sit back and enjoy reading--cover to cover. Putting it down is going to be as hard as solving their problems. While addicted to the author's dragons, this series has my heart as well. I want these people living such constricted lives to find freedom and love. My message to Ms. Donovan, More, please. I voluntarily reviewed this advanced reader copy and I have not been compensated in any way.

***I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*** Okay so this is the second book of the Kelderan Runic Warriors series. This one was about Vala and Thorin. First I like to say that I love this series the first book blew me away completely. The world building left me speechless as the characters. In this series the complex worlds and societies but in place can upset some but like in every society everything has to change slowly. I'm in awe with this world though from the many alien species being introduce slowly to how Jessie manages to place humans all over the galaxy I guess you can say. In the previous book it was mention that Keldera were going to start a new colony in a new planet called Jasvar. Which is inhabited by humans, there was an agreement between the leader of Jasvar and the monarchy of Keldera to make it possible. This book follows the attempted journey for the first colonists to head to Jasvar. Alright so Vala is a Barren woman, which is basically women that cannot bear children. In the Kelderan society that means she is treated as a second class citizen. (Which will piss you off for being a new age woman lol) They are also given such unfairly treatments and rules to abay by that it breaks your heart to see it happening. Seeing her opportunity to for a better life in Jasvar where she wouldn't be treated as second class citizen Vala practically jumps at the chance to leave. Vala was knowledgeable, strategic and filled with sass. I loved how she came out of her shell throughout the book. Thorin is a general in the Kelderan army, his parentage of half-Brevkan (another type of alien and enemy to the Kelderans) he had to hide a lot of himself. Especially his partriage since it would only get him killed in Keldera. At first it was hard to like Thorin because he was a first class a** I'm sorry it's true. But eventually you get to know him and eventually you'll break for him. All the crap his been through and had to endure? Yeah that would do it for you. Thorin also proved to be a great general putting his duty before his needs. The man basically won me over. Overall this book was awesome to read, if the world complexity doesn't get you? Maybe the characters and their sass will. Idk how Jessie does it but I wasn't disappointed at all with this book. Technically with the series I was hesitant at first but I was proven wrong. If you are too give it a shot don't shut it down just yet, you won't regret it.

The Barren is the 2nd book in Jessie Donovan's new paranormal world known as The Kelderan Runic Warriors. Book two is centered around Vala Yarlen, a Barren, marked as a female who can't bare children and Thorin Jarrell, a general for the Kelderan army. Both characters were introduced to you in book one. Vala, General Thorin and a large group of people are aboard a spaceship, which Thorin himself is leading, and headed for a new colony. They are leaving their home in Keldera and heading to Jasvar, to help save their people from dying and to try and build a better way of life for all. Vala has been stationed to help General Thorin in all matters, which she is upset about but will rise above. They do not have the best of relationships and she's afraid he might judge her for her previous attempts at helping others. To him she is merely a barren, who should reflect her eyes to the ground at all times and whom he has no use for. She sees him as a hard ass General that nobody likes but seem to respect. Along the way they are hit with one unforeseen problem after another and have decided to work together and to trust each other in order to survive. Vala learns a secret about who the General really is and why he is the way he is. She is very understanding of his secret and begins to see him in a different light. She also tries to help him see that he is more then just his secret and they end up bonding and falling in love. Which of course causes more problems and secrets to be kept because a General can not take a bride below him, and there is nothing below a Barren level. A new enemy is brought to life in this book along with a secret that you never saw coming. The book is filled with action, adventure, romance and sexually charged scenes. There is also one scene involving abuse that sensitive readers may find disturbing but is the build up for the next book and very well written. While reading in order isn't necessary you'd probably find the second book more enjoyable if you read The Conquest, book one. I was given a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!! ***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! Yes, I received a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book! The cover is definitely eye catching! This is the 2nd book in the series, and it is for adults only due to the steamy content. While reading in order is not required, it is much better if you do because when previous events are mentioned you will know and the characters are richer. I want to mention that a woman is battered in the book, so if you are sensitive this topic take appropriate measures. This book was very interesting and action packed. I was hooked from the beginning. I didn’t want to put it down at all. I already loved Vala from book 1 because she is awesome, but in this book, she is even more so. Her tolerance and understanding is epic. Thorin was not high in my favorite list, but he is definitely something else. Vala opens your eyes to him as you read, and it is an amazing journey. I was secretly hoping something would happen, but it didn’t. I am definitely hooked on this series. Jessie always develops the most amazing stories that leave me wanting more and loving her HEAs. I can’t wait to see what she cooks up next! I highly recommend to sci-fi fans who love space travel, treachery, and romance especially if you liked book 1!
