The first book in this new vampire series is a disappointing read. There's too much internal dialogue and debate and not enough action. The protagonist unconvincingly wavers between being too tough and too sensitive. She's simply not believable or sympathetic. The plot is a thin, basic tale of a woman accidentally turned vampire. It does not hold reader attention and becomes downright irritating when the heroine flounders into an awkward/ill-defined relationship and flails about trying to locate her abducted partner. The plot's outcome and climax are also underwhelming and unsatisfying. I can't recommend this book.

I'm not a fan of the first person present tense format used here. I understand it usually adds urgency and excitement but not here. It was a quick read but the story progressed too fast for Anna's relationship to Avery to make any sense. What she saw in him as an attraction was never really explained and her trust in him was inexplicable which made the outcome unsurprising and unexciting. I suppose this is the beginning of a series which explains why a good explanation for what happened is never really revealed but I'm not exactly inspired to find out. None of the characters were interesting enough for me to care about their well being or future exploits. As plots go, this one was a bit humdrum.

I loved this book. This series has actually helped me become a more frequent reader. Anna is the bad girl every woman wants to be for at least a day! She is hot, is not afraid of her sexuality and can hold her own with any bad guys she is chasing.

"...All in all, I know most of what I have said seems negative, but once the book got past the rape and the smut, it really started to pick up and I didn't want to put it down - I was very interested to know what was going to happen next, who was behind certain things, when she was going to realize who she could or couldn't trust - and I'm definitely going to pick up the next in the series! If the rest of them continue the way The Becoming left off, they should be full of action, which is what I expected from a series about a bounty hunter-turned-vampire." I really enjoyed this book. It did a great job of holding my attention and I loved the characters from the good guys to the bad guys. Can't wait to read the next book :)

The Becoming was an okay vampire story. A slightly different take from the usual, albeit not a dramatic departure. I'm a bit leery of a main character who is referred to several times as 'built for sex.' Sort of gives you the LKH direction the stories are going to take. It wasn't over the top in this one, but you can see it coming. Related: have you noticed that no one writes a book just to write A book anymore? They're all writing potential series openers. It left me 'meh' enough that I'm unlikely to pick up another. In stark contrast, Mooncalled, a werewolf fic I read last year, was interesting, not sexed to the 9s, had a plot and an actual unique take. *shrug*

Unfortunately, although the review I read indicated these novels would be enjoyed by those who also liked Laurell K. Hamilton and Charlaine Harris, I found the novel to be underwhelming.  The character was not one to whom I could relate, and her reaction to "Becoming" a vampire was unbelievable.  I did not trust the protagonist vampire, Dr. Avery, regardless of his attempts to initiate her into vampirism, and quite frankly, was bored throughout most of the book.  Although I've also read the second novel in this series in an effort to give the character more time to fully develop, I stopped about halfway through the book and decided I'd rather read older standards that I prefer, such as Barbara Hambly's "Traveling with the Dead" or "Those Who Hunt the Night."  Those vampires, although they are from an older era, are much more realistic and even empathetic than Anna Strong.

I enjoyed this book. Just wish that it was available for my Nook. Can't wait to receive the next book in the series, which is also not available on Nook.

I had read some of the negative reviews and did not know how this would turn out. However, I could not stop reading it. The book is well worth the read and I am already looking at getting the others in the series.

There were several negative reviews that had me avoiding this book. Look this isn't my favorite series I've read but it is a worthy series to spend your $ & time on. I should have known that author Richelle Mead would not recommended a poorly written story... I thought Anna Strong lived up to her name and the plot was fast paced. Before I could finish this book I had #2 & #3 waiting!
