The Best Damn Thing

The Best Damn Thing is brimming with gutsy guitar riffs, catchy choruses, and power pop punk. It’s a marked departure from the darker, more introspective tone of Under My Skin, and on tracks such as the defiant, kiss-off-to-a-cheating-boyfriend "Everything Back but You," Lavigne creates scenarios that weren’t, as she says in her bio, "straight out of my diary." The result is a collection of songs that reveal a more mature singer-songwriter -- from the sassy, empowering "I Can Do Better" to the Ashlee Simpson-reminiscent single "Girlfriend," which combines rock chords, handclaps, and a chanted girl-group-style chorus to the emotional ballad "Keep Holding On," originally from the fantasy film Eragon.

To all of you thrity-some-year-olds who have no life and sit on their butts the whole day and write comments about artists who you don't even listen to are crazy! The Best Damn Thing albumn has jumped up to the tops of the Billboard charts and I can guarantee that the albumn will be huge. Every song on the albumn speaks truth about teens and their lives, which is exactly who its aimed at. So please, don't make any comments about the albumn unless you are a part of the directed audience and so you won't feel like a complete idiot when the albumn goes platinum. m'kay? :]]

The first two albums could be considered punk, on some levels, but this is so far from punk it's unbelieveable. It's good as a pop album, but if it ever were to be considered a rock album I'd be the first to condem it. Innocence, and When You're Gone are some of the better songs. Everything Back But You is good too.

She went from good girl to bad A never thought she would have parental Advisory on one of her albums especially one that said strong language

I used to be an Avril Lavigne fan. But that was back when she was a different take on the teeny-bopping, extremely cheesy pop-shakes that the industry kept coming out with. But, I feel like with this album, she's gone a couple of steps backward. Her last 2 albums didn't have a mediocre song in them but this one barely has 2 songs which I would call at least mediocre. "Innocence" is perhaps the best on the album. The others are passable.

the first time i heard "girlfriend" i was ready to give up on Avril for good. i literally thought she had sold out. but then after a few more listens, and after seeing the music video, i just couldn't deny that the song is just really fun. and that's the whole concept of this album, i think. it's just fun. and there's nothing wrong with that. sure, it's not as deep or personal as "under my skin," but if you don't expect it to be, then you'll be pleasantly surprised with the album. as for why there's such a drastic change in her music and in her image, i would chalk it up to the fact that she's married. she's happy. and it shows in her music. get ready to dance and sing your ass of with this album, best songs are "i can do better," "the best damn thing," and "contagious."

I think I could listen to these songs all day and still not get sick of them! They are so good!

And she's back ladies and gents - the best singer to ever be a part of the 'anti-Brittany' troupe. From gothic punk- to rock goddess, Avril Lavinge proves that she still has the rebellious teenager attiude to enforce her awesome music. The guitar and base in 'Girlfriend' was ampted! 'Keep Holding On' is my most fave song on the cd b/c 'Eragon' is like the best move to come out here since 'Phantom of the Opera'. Many think she's a poser but the fact is, as I read in a magazine once, that she was 'maturing in fashion' so for those who are ture fan, you understand, as for those who refuse to be true fans and go around 'OMG! She's such a figgin poser!' BACK OFF! Avril we love you!!!!!

For all you Avril fans you will be disappointed. Because I don't understand why Avril has 3 good songs. I mean all her songs are good but they are also really choppy. Like the song Hot I could pass on that one big time. The 3 songs I like aren't punk rock they are Innocence, When You're Gone, and Keep Holding On. OK fine Girlfriend is good too but it's just that those three songs are better. This album also had some good sides even though lots of songs were choppy they were also good. You could kinda hear them over and over. I mean it's good but not that good. I've listened to all her albums. And her best one is Under My Skin. The best damn thing should be called. The OK album. I really thought that The Best Damn Thing wasn't a good title.

I have always been a fan of Avril and love her first two albums. This one however is so pop and commercial, that is hard to listen to. Is she and her record company suddenly courting the 12 and under crowd? I hope not. Gain your independence now, Avril. You are a terrific songwriter. Return to intelligent music before it's too late!

Sure she isn't the punk princess that we use to love, but she still has a great voice that shines. With tracks like "Hot," "When You're Gone," "Innocence," and "I Can Do Better" how could you go wrong? "Everything Back But You" is lyrically great, fun and catchy.

Now, before I begin, don't get me wrong: this album is nowhere near as good as Let Go (my personal favorite) or even Under My Skin. I'm not thrilled with the direction Avril has chosen to steer her career, and I continue to hope that her next album will return to her roots. With that said, The Best Damn Thing may not live up to it's title, but it's still a pretty damn good album. p Girlfriend - 6/10 - Don't judge the entire album based on this track. Girlfriend is quite grating on the ears, but, while other songs fall into the same vein musically, the lyrics aren't quite as contrived. p I Can Do Better - 8/10 - The title of this song speaks volumes. She may have meant it to refer to the many guys who have apparently crossed her, but I see it as a reflection of her musical abilities. Still a good, fast song. p Runaway - 10/10 - This song is probably the closest to "old" Avril you'll get on this album. It has catchy drums (she even played drums on this song in concert) and some of the best vocals you'll find here. Great track. p The Best Damn Thing - 9/10 - Ah, the title track. It kicks off with a bit of Avril's Gwen Stefani rip-off (think Hollaback Girl), but it manages to save itself with its extremely catchy pop chorus and hooks. This song will keep you dancing, that's for sure. p When You're Gone - 7/10 - Everyone seems to like this song, but it seems like a bit of a drag to me. Avril's vocal talents shine on this track, and the lyrics are more complex than "hey hey you you, I don't like your girlfriend". Not great, but not half bad either. p Everything Back But You - 7/10 - This song sounds strikingly similar to something Sum 41 would do - maybe due to Avril's marriage to Sum's Deryck Whibley? Either way, this is another tribute to every girl who's been ditched by her two-timing man. Great for letting your temper out with it's shouted chorus. p Hot - 6/10 - I must admit, this is probably my least favorite song on the album. I love the verses, but the slowdown of the chorus and the general message of the song just weigh it down in my book. Still, not a bad effort, just not great. p Innocence - 8/10 - Avril has, in the past, shown herself capable of producing beautiful ballads. Innocence does not disappoint in this regard. This track allows the listener to take a break from the angry pop and enjoy a simple tribute to, well, innocence. This song really shows what Avril could be capable of. p I Don't Have to Try - 6/10 - I must admit, this is one of the weirdest songs in the bunch. It certainly doesn't require much singing talent to chant "I wear the pants!". This song's title seems to reflect her stance on her music these days - just put together a couple catchy hooks and send the album out. Again, the song isn't bad, but it shows that maybe Avril DOES have to try.. p One of Those Girls - 9/10 - I really enjoyed this song as a tribute to the days of Sk8er Boi. It's a quick blast of a song, clocking in at under 3 minutes, but it's got a fun message and sing-along capability. One of my favorites off this album. p Contagious - 9/10 - It seems like these late-album songs get forgotten, maybe because they are each only 2 minutes and change. But Contagious is another great old-Avril-like song. It's poppy and simple, she's fallen in love and it's "contagious". Good track. p Keep Holding On - 8/10 - Everyone had heard this track long before the release of this album. It isn't half bad, but it seems to get lost in the shuffle. I get the feeling this song was tacked to the end of the album as an afterthought when it became popular. Still not a song to forget. p Overall, the album is neither perfect nor is it up to Avril's potential. However, it's still a necessary piece in a good music collection - it will hold us listeners over while we wait for another CD to capture the spirit of Let Go, at least.

From pissed off tomboy to glam rock queen, Avril has really grown up to become a beautiful young lady. Each album she has put out has been edgy, catchy and something most of us could relate to. Her past two albums were more like a diary. This one is lighthearted, fun and surprisingly, something you can dance to. Here are some tracks I recommend... 1. I Can Do Better - in your face pop/rock, catchy 2. Innocence - absolutely beautiful song 3. Runaway - brings me back to the 'Let Go' era 4. Alone - its a b-side check it out though, great song. :P

She gives us more of that pop/rock we loved her for. It's closer to Let Go than Under My Skin was, but she keeps some elements from Under My Skin where she branched out.

What happened? And whats with all the cusing? All these song have a few cuse words in them why do you really have to use the f word in the song? These songs are realy good but gez I dont mi the D**n's and H**ls but the f word? She is a really great singer but stop cusing! I loved ur last 2 CD's! With normal hair being a normal gril she used to make fun of wht she is now! Just go back to wht you were kids here this stuff on the radio!

This CD, like her others, was a pretty good CD. But on her CD, the types of songs differ, which makes it amazing for you because you know that the work came from her. I like her because of that. But some of her songs I didn't like that much.

I'v already heard the entire cd and for something that the artist made up and didn't extract from real life experiance it's amazing. It's really upbeat and I think it will appeal to a wide audience. Her voice is so pretty and I love how care-free it sounds as well.
