The Best of the Caravans

Every once in a while an artist comes along with the ability to identify young talent and offer a training camp for future superstars. In jazz, Miles Davis and Art Blakey come to mind. R&B had James Brown. In the world of gospel, you can't do any better than Sister Albertina Walker and her blazing Caravans. Founded in 1952 by Walker and other members of the Robert Anderson Singers, the Caravans roster reads like a gospel hall of fame: Shirley Ceasar, Inez Andrews, James Cleveland, Dorothy Norwood, and Cassieta George, among others, did time in "starmaker" Albertina's group over the years. This generous disc collects 23 tracks from the late '50s and early '60s, years when the Caravans reigned as one of the top gospel attractions in the country. This high-octane gospel fire featuring female lead and backing singers not only inspired frequent altar calls but also provided the template for the girl-group invasion of the late '60s. Inez Andrews leads the landmark "Mary Don't You Weep" with unmatched vocal intensity. Shirley Ceasar testifies over churning organ on "Choose Ye This Day." Walker powers through the shout "To Whom Shall I Turn." THE BEST OF THE CARAVANS is a nonstop ride through some of the best classic gospel available. As the rotating cast of young singers take center stage, you can hear the history and the future of gospel music.
