Gus Cileone's newest novel, The Bigger Picture, picks up the story of Vince Singleton and the rest of the cast of characters introduced in his previous book The Big Picture. Along with the fun of the movie references, and the banter between the characters as they try to top one another with movie quotes, The Bigger Picture is an intriguing murder mystery. Or to be more accurate, it is two murder mysteries. Vince has become more or less successful in dealing with the PTSD symptoms he experienced after the shooting death of his wife Jewel, which was ruled an accident. Or was it? Just as Vince begins to teach a non-credit course on femme fatale characters in films, a woman is brutally murdered. And the murderer leaves behind clues related to movies that draw Vince into the case with the police. Additionally, the murderer threatens harm to Vince's daughter Hope and his girl friend Gina if he is unable to decipher the clues and prevent the next murder. Author Cileone skillfully tells a murder story, with compelling characters in an authentic Philadelphia setting, while entertaining (and educating in my case) the reader with playful dialog full of movie lines and references. Along the way, he keeps the reader interested in Vince Singleton and his circle of film buffs, and events that shed light on the death of Vince's wife. The main character's love of cats even gets in on the act with several quoted lines from The Truth about Cats and Dogs. The Bigger Picture is an engaging and entertaining novel.
