Overview

The Black Book by James Patterson, David Ellis

The "thrilling" #1 New York Times and USA Today bestseller (Karin Slaughter): when three bodies are found in a Chicago bedroom, a black book goes missing . . . and the city has never been more dangerous.

Billy Harney was born to be a cop. As the son of Chicago's chief of detectives with a twin sister on the force, Billy plays it by the book. Teaming up with his adrenaline-junkie partner, Detective Kate Fenton, there's nothing he wouldn't sacrifice for his job. Enter Amy Lentini, a hard-charging assistant attorney hell-bent on making a name for herself who suspects Billy isn't the cop he claims to be. They're about to be linked by more than their careers.

A horrifying murder leads investigators to an unexpected address-an exclusive brothel that caters to Chicago's most powerful citizens. There's plenty of incriminating evidence on the scene, but what matters most is what's missing: the madam's black book. Now with shock waves rippling through the city's elite, everyone's desperate to find it.

As Chicago's elite scramble to get their hands on the elusive black book, no one's motives can be trusted. An ingenious, inventive thriller about power, corruption, and the secrets that can destroy a city, The Black Book is James Patterson at his page-turning best.

I sometimes find myself not enjoying James Patterson's books unless they are from the Women's Murder Club series, so I was hesitant to read this book. The premise of a dirty cop intrigued me and I am so glad I gave it a chance. This book was so good. I was shocked even at the very end. The twists and turns kept me reading and the characters were very well written. Give this book a read if you are in the mood for a fast- paced, thrilling read!

I used to love James Patterson, his books were full of mystery and they would hold my interest until the very end....notice i said "used to." His books now are all the same, using the exact same formula, so theres very little surprise. The books starts off with a murder. Then we go back for some of the history to why that person is dead. Then...family member (cousin, sister, spouse) comes to the rescue. solving the murder and finding love.and there ya go.

The Black Book is the story of when everything goes wrong during a case in the search for a Little Black Book! Being a cop in Chicago runs in Billy Harney's family with his father being the Chief of Detectives and his twin sister, Patty following in their father's footsteps. It takes a brutal shooting that will leave his former partner along with assistant district attorney dead and Billy not remembering what had happened before the shooting. With the story going back and forth between present day and before Billy was shot, we that everything stems from a simple drug bust that lead into even a bigger case with a missing Little Black Book at stake. As Billy tries to uncover the secrets of what had happened in those days before he was shot, he will soon discover someone close to him that is behind everything in the most shocking way to end this thriller of a read!! I was a huge James Patterson fan just a couple of years ago but kinda felt that everything that he was coming out was more or less just the same thing over and over. This book is nothing like I have read before and it has made me fall in love with Patterson's writing all over again. The way this story goes back and forth between present day and what had happened before, really gets you into that explosive story-line that you really don't know what will happen next! I thought I had it figured out on who did what but until you read the entire book, nothing is what it seems!! Thank You to James Patterson for writing a story that has made me become a fan all over again and I can't wait to see what is next!! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from the Publisher!
