Readers are always lucky when Hitchcock strolls into town - after all it means a great mystery with a stunning and mischievous cat at its heart. The second Bad Luck Cat mystery is easily as entertaining as the first, establishing Kay Finch as a solid contributor to the pet mystery subgenre. Not only does Kay Finch present readers with a complex mystery with a wide assortment of suspects and motives, she gives us a winning pair of amateur detectives - Sabrina Tate and her cat Hitchcock. Not only do they have to solve a mystery where the main suspect won't act in her own best interest, they have to keep an eye on Aunt Rowe who is always up to something reckless and potentially dangerous. In this instance, Aunt Rowe and her friends plan to take part in the Senior Pro Rodeo, despite the absence of skills and experience. In The Black Cat Knocks on Wood, Aunt Rowe's friend Pearl asks to borrow Hitchcock as she wants a local realtor to suffer. Pearl was looking forward to purchasing the adjacent store space when Crystal suddenly claimed that there was no contract made. Things look bad for Pearl when she discovers Crystal's body minutes after her death. Naturally Pearl begs Sabrina to help clear her name, a difficult task when the suspect is as uncooperative as Pearl. The arrival of Sabrina's crotchety old boss is icing on the cake. Suspense, danger, a scene stealing cat and just a bit of humor and romance make for a delightful read. I loved The Black Cat Knocks on Wood and eagerly await the next installment in the series. 5/5 I received a copy of The Bad Luck Cat Knocks on Wood from the publisher and in exchange for an honest review. --Crittermom

The Black Cat Knocks on Wood by Kay Finch is the second book in A Bad Luck Cat Mystery series. Sabrina Tate is trying to work on her new novel, but Aunt Rowe (an eccentric) and her friends are practicing for the goat tying competition. They wish to compete at the Texas Hill Country Pro Rodeo (and maybe perform as well. Sabrina is worried that Aunt Rowe will hurt herself (Aunt Rowe is stubborn and determined). Sabrina also does not like the rodeo because she believes it is cruel to animals. Sabrina rents a cottage from Aunt Rowe (Rowena Flowers) at Around-the-World Cottages. Each cottage is decorated after a different destination (like Paris and Monte Carlo). Pearl who owns the Sweet Stop is having some difficulties. Pearl arranged to purchase the empty shop next door (for expanding the Sweet Stop) with Crystal Devlin (realtor) and then Crystal reneged on the deal (after Pearl gave her earnest money). Pearl tried to talk Sabrina into loaning her Hitchcock, Sabrina’s black cat. Pearl was hoping to give Crystal some bad luck (the town is very superstitious). Sabrina refused Pearl’s request. Then Sabrina receives a call from Pearl. Pearl needs to see her right away. When Sabrina arrives at the destination, she finds Pearl and a dead Crystal Devlin (Pearl called Sabrina instead of 911). Then a black cat rushes out of the building and the police show up (at least someone called them). Pearl ends up the primes suspect in Crystal’s death. Pearl needs help and Sabrina cannot resist a good investigation (even if it will mess with her writing schedule). Will Sabrina be able to corral the killer before Pearl ends up in the poky? The Black Cat Knocks on Wood was not quite as good as it sounds. I found the book to be slow paced. There were very few clues (not that you need them, but it is fun to find and follow them). I found Sabrina to be a little bit of a contradiction. She is supposed to be an animal lover and against animal cruelty (really dislikes rodeos). But she has a cat door and lets her cat roam outside (and he manages to get into town). The town is scared of the cat (but she takes the cat with her into town). Why would she let it outside where someone could get a hold of it and hurt it? I found some reactions (from townspeople) a little over-the-top. An example is the dry cleaning lady. When the lady opens her door and sees the black cat, she screams and slams her door! Sabrina was a little brusque in her questioning of people (who do not even have to talk to her or answer her questions). My favorite character was Aunt Rowe (Rowena Flowers). I really liked her and wish she was the main character. I think the novel would be more entertaining (just my feelings). I give The Black Cat Knocks on Wood 3 out of 5 stars (it was okay). I think with a little tweaking; this could be an enjoyable series. This is the second book in A Bad Luck Cat Mystery series, but you can read it as a stand-alone. The author does a good job of updating the reader in case they missed the first book. Will I read the next book in the series? I believe I will give it a try. I received a complimentary copy of the novel in exchange for an honest evaluation of the book.

Book 2 is a great mystery combined with a look at the rodeo world thanks to Sabrina's Aunt Rowe and her friends and a murder. I wish the author would have at least let us read about the ladies and their humorous goat act but that would have not fit the ending. I like the character development and Hitchcock, so I definitely have Bad Luck Cat books on my Must Read List!

Black cats are unlucky? Maybe for some, but certainly not for author Kay Finch or her readers! Cat cozy fans are going to be thrilled with this second book in the Bad Luck Cat Mysteries, but you certainly don’t have to be a cat lover to enjoy this wonderful tale. My return trip to Lavender was just as exciting as my first. With murder, seniors (as in citizens) rodeo, and paranoid fear over an innocent black cat…how could it not be? THE BLACK CAT KNOCKS ON WOOD was a wonderful mystery. Writer Sabrina Tate and her black cat, Hitchcock, are once again at the center of a murder. With one thing after the other going wrong, I was uncertain the murderer would ever be found. But of course the baddy was found! With a great plot, superbly penned by author Finch, this story kept me guessing until the action filled reveal! The back of this book has some yummy recipes. Make sure to check them out!

Sabrina Tate and her cat Hitchcock make a great duo in this action packed cozy mystery. Sabrina, a mystery writer, is trying to work on her next book, however, her Aunt Rowe is making it difficult for her. Aunt Rowe and her friends are practicing for the Texas Hill Country Senior Pro Rodeo. Even though these feisty ladies don't know the first thing about roping animals, they will make you laugh with their crazy, far out antics. Sabrina's cat Hitchcock, known as the bad luck cat, is such a fun part of this story. All cat lovers will enjoy reading this fun filled series. When a family friend wants to "borrow" Hitchcock, with the hopes of bringing bad luck to a local business woman, Sabrina is firm in her answer of NO! Unfortunately, bad luck does fall upon someone and before long, Sabrina is nosing around looking for clues. I really liked this book and I am looking forward to reading more in this series. I will be recommending this book to other cozy mystery fans. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my fair and honest review.
