The Bloody Mary Club by Debbie Dyke

A Fiscal Thriller Set in Historic Old Town Alexandria, Virginia

Stock market meltdown. United States housing bubble. Global financial crisis. Chief executives cooking the books. Who can you trust for financial advice? Gina Van Story, a savvy 40ish investment advisor to the rescue. She can spot a trend on the market and jump on it like a cat. She dreams of grabbing the bull by the horns and is on the hunt for one final big score. Gina and her three best friends form the Bloody Mary Investment Club and come face-to-face with corruption in a David and Goliath struggle when their stock portfolio turns deadly…literally.

Over made-to-order Bloody Mary cocktails at historic Gadsby’s Tavern, Gina takes her friends under her wing and teaches them the ins and outs of the stock market. Trouble begins when, following Gina’s bullish advice, they become majority owners in the local bank and then stubbornly turn down a lucrative buyout offer. Not only will money and greed challenge their friendship, they will have to get smart fast and figure out how to turn the tables on the charmingly seductive, yet evil, banker who wants control of their stock by any means necessary – including murder!

This is an excellently written fiction which is very relevant to our times. Although it is marketed as fiction, clearly the author understands the industries she writes about and one can gain insights from her. I thought the idea of the initial tidbits of wisdom at the beginning of each chapter was clever and witty. A great beach book read or just to relax with at the end of the day.

My favorite part of this book was the wonderful sayings that the author had at the beginning of each chapter. All of the sayings had to do with finances, investment in the like--which is, of course, the premise of the story. Which is probably why it was not my favorite read. After all, what do I know about money, investment and the stock market? Really, I know nothing. So I can't say this is a book where I was truly able to connect with the story and the characters. But this is not the fault of the author--nothing could be further from the truth. The author's writing style fits the story well, and I think that anyone who likes action-packed, financial stories, this is definitely the book for you! Let me caution you. There is a hefty dose of profanity in the book, but that is pretty normal for this genre. There are some sexual situations, but nothing major. I was greatly intrigued by the fact that this book was considered for a movie, TV show, and who knows what else. I can certainly see how it would be an excellent movie and/or TV show, and maybe one day it will be resurrected. It is certainly something different than the typical, run-of-the-mill thriller. For those who are heavily entrenched in the financial industry, this is the perfect escape. For me, I feel that I need to have some more background to thoroughly understand this story. I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

I stumbled across this book searching 'women's fiction' and 'thrillers.' While I have not finished the book yet (I have about 100 more pages to go) I cannot get over all the typos and grammatical errors (the 'social' Safeway grocery store; Slay hit his 'can' against the column - just to name a few). Ms. Dyke needs to reconsider hiring a new publisher/editor. The story is interesting but I sometimes get lost with the excessive use of slang/street-talk. I understand the author is trying to be casual and make it feel like we're sitting at the Tavern with the girls but it is overkill.

In this day and age of stock market scandals and banking woes most aren’t eager to read anything dealing with financial issues. However, author Debbie Dyke has put a fun and interesting spin on the situation resulting in a delightful mystery, THE BLOODY MARY CLUB. Savvy 40ish investment advisor Gina Van Story puts her talents to use and talks her three best friends into forming the Bloody Mary Investment Club. Gina teaches her friends the ins and outs of the stock market while they enjoy made-to-order Bloody Mary cocktails at the historic Gadsby’s Tavern. All seems to be going well as they become majority owners in the local bank. However, trouble begins when they turn down a lucrative buyout offer for their part in the bank. Gina is attacked, threats are made and friendships become strained. To make matters worse, the man trying to buy them out is not only charming and seductive but possibly capable of murder. Dyke has created a witty and charming protagonist in Gina. She’s strong, independent and loyal to her friends. All of the characters are well developed and feature realistic traits making the story more plausible. The friends can bicker among themselves, but stand as one against trouble as true friends do. The story overall moves at a good pace and holds your interest. It has charm and intrigue. While there are financial terms used that slow the story a bit, they are necessary for the plot. THE BLOODY MARY CLUB is a tantalizing read that will have you smiling about financial woes. Can’t wait to see what Gina invests in next. FTC Full Disclosure - I requested this book as part of the author’s blog tour. An eBook copy was sent to me by the author in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.

I picked this book up because of the clever title, and it proved to be a superb choice! Fun, fast-paced, enjoyable and written by someone who obviously had close insight to the stock market world. I will be recommending it to all my friends. Hope Ms. Dyke continues with more in this genre.

This a great summer read. I loved the setting and the after a few pages I felt like I was reading about people I know. The characters where engaging and while I am no financial guru, I found the scenes around high stakes broker life really exciting and wanted to read more. Looking forward to more writing from this author.
