ER has a way with character development that is among the best. Edmund , returning from Waterloo, wounded in body and mind must adjust to life anew as his friends have moved on without him, thinking him dead and his fiancee has agreed to marry someone else to give his child a name. Sarah, is thrilled to find that Edmund has survived but must deal with guilt over almost marrying one of his best friends in his absence. Having grown up in an unstable household she is fearful for her baby's future on their limited income. She also has to deal with body image issues after her pregnancy and feeling acceptable to her husband. Ridley handles all these problems with feeling and humor and hard to put down writing.

I loved this story also. It was a quick read and I loved these characters also. For me it could have been longer but it was still enjoyable.

When i saw that this book in the series consisted of 150 pages, i prepared myself for disappointment. I was very wrong. Maybe because of the other books before it that I'd read, i didnt miss the additional developement of supporting character. In fact, i felt as if I already knew the MC's in this book efore i even started reading their story. You could read this book without having read the others in the dukes of war series, but i wouldnt recommend it. Having read this series in order, i can say that this was just as good as all the others and a treat to be read in so little time-the juicy parts came sooner and the satisfying ending swiftly followed.

This is a fabulous book!!! I pre-ordered it when it came out and never had an issue with it. It took me a while to leave the review...sorry! This series by Erica Ridley really is amazing! I have enjoyed every single one of the books and this one is no exception. I was so happy that Edmund was not dead! That alone made the book worth the read. I am glad that everything worked out in the end. If you have not read this series, start with the first one...most of the time the first novella is free!

I liked Sarah. What I enjoyed the most about her was that she despite having the rug pull out from under her feet numerous ties she refused to allow others to dictate her life. She was a character that was full of surprises and that is what grabbed and held my attention. The anatomy of a great story at least for me is that it is engaging and hard to walk away from. This was those two things and more. I received a copy of The Brigadier's Runaway Bride in exchange for an honest review.

This was a good story that you can easily read in an evening. The hero was left for dead at Waterloo and comes home to find his pregnant love about to marry his best friend. He marries her asap. She worries over how they'll live. He has what we call post traumatic stress from the war. They don't communicate very well but with time they do find their happy ending. I liked these characters, while wanting to knock their heads together. Not the best book in the series, but still a good read. 3.5 stars

Edmund and Sarah had everything to look forward to when he came home from war – if he came home from war. However, when they are finally face to face again neither is what the other one expected…not at all. Will their friendship, love and passion be able to withstand what lies ahead of them? Will they be able to trust one another, share their innermost thoughts and become the loving couple and parents they both wish to be? That is what this story is about. I like both Sarah and Edmund and think this book deals well with the issue of new parents and all they go through. I liked the depth of character development and also enjoyed seeing some of the characters from previous books in the series brought forth again. In one scene, where Edmund pushes Sarah to the ground and covers her thinking due to something that happens outside the window that thrusts him back to the battlefield, I can honestly say that very thing happened in my Beirut apartment decades ago when an ex-marine and his wife were visiting and shooting started nearby outside. Great story! Looking forward to reading more in this series soon!

I have been waiting for this one! So happy to see Sarah find her HEA. It was great how much of ther dealing with new babies and married life seemed so real and current with today and the terror of the war. Another excellent job by a great author!!!!

Shame on you Barnes and Noble, and Ms. Ridley's publisher. This book clearly doesn't work, and no one cares enough over there to do anything about it. I called earlier, the rep downloaded the book herself and noted the same problem. No offer was made to refund my money, and I was then told that it could take UP TO TWO WEEKS!!! to fix. What??

This is book 5 in the Dukes of War series. To secure her future, Miss Sarah Fairfax, is marrying her former intended's best friend. What else can she do after finding herself pregnant and her fiancee killed during the war. No one is more surprised than Sarah, when her former intended shows up at her wedding determined to get her back. Brigadier Edmund Blackpool was left for dead on the battlefield. Fighting to get his way back home, the image of Sarah is the only thing that got him through. He can't believe that she is marrying his best friend and is about to have a baby. But he won't give up without a fight and quickly marries Sarah. But a lot has changed in 9 months. They are about to have a baby. Can these two lovers find their way back to each other? This is definitely different than the other books in the Duke of War series or other historical romances for that matter. Sarah and Edmund quickly find themselves parents and a lot of the story revolves around them adjusting to being parents and finding that spark again. While I did enjoy the story, it definitely isn't my favorite of the series. Captain Blackheart's story is up next. I can't wait to read it. He has intrigued me since we first met him in The Earl's Defiant Wallflower. Thanks go out to Intrepid Reads for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

A wonderful addition to this excellent series. Sarah’s heart broke when she found out that her fiancé had died in the war. She must move forward and think of her unborn child and decides to marry one of her fiancé’s best friends, Phillip, the Duke of Ravenwood. Both are shocked when Edmund returns from the dead at their wedding. Will Sarah still love the man that comes back from the brink of death not who he once was? The story is fast paced, entertaining and sweet. A wonderful historical read!

#5 in the "The Dukes of War" series, but can be read as a stand alone. Although, I would suggest reading the series in its entirety. The Dukes of War series order: 1. The Viscount's Christmas Temptation 2. The Earl's Defiant Wallflower 3. Captain's Bluestocking Mistress 4. The Major's Faux Fiancee 5. The Brigadier's Runaway Bride *Book 1 is Free, at this time* A fast paced tale of four young men, who went off to war, however, only three came back or so they thought. Edmund, was badly injured and left for dead, but he managed to survive to come back to his beloved childhood sweetheart and the love of his life, marrying his best friend. Which, he promptly stops. No one marries Sarah Fairfax but Brigadier Edmund Blackpool. Of course, it doesn't help, she is heavy with his child. Together Edmund and Sarah must learn each other again, learn to be new parents, fight Edmund's PSTD, live in cramped quarters and find their passion again, just to name a few of the challenges and struggles they face. A very emotionally complex story that is intriguing as well as interesting. The characters are realistic, engaging and believable. The storyline is well written and unique. Ms. Ridley does an exceptional job at convening PTSD during the Regency era, their struggles, their strength, the challenges they face daily, and the challenges their loved ones face as well, who are all dealing with aftermath of War. It has its witty moments as well as its intense, and emotional moments. A well written story that showcases Ms. Ridley's talents as an exceptional author. Fans of Historical Romance are sure to enjoy this marvelous story of second chances, passion, romance, the challenges of parenthood (which I must say was hilarious at times), the emotional aftermath of War and the power of love. A powerful tale from beginning to end. This has been an awesome series, to me! I can't wait to see what's in store for the next "Dukes of War" installment. Fans are in for a truly memorable treat with this story. A must read! An absolutely amazing story! *Received for an honest review from the author via Net Gallery* Rating: 4.5 Heat rating: Mild Reviewed by: AprilR, courtesy of My Book Addiction and More

Sarah Fairfax’s heart & soul died the day her fiancé was killed on the battlefield at Waterloo. Until she learned their one night together left her with child – then a small piece of her bloomed knowing she would have a little piece of Edmund always with her. The only problem – she was unmarried and with child = social ruin. Until the day Phillip, the Duke of Ravenwood (one of Edmund’s best friends) offers to marry Sarah to provide a future for her & her child. A mere weeks from delivery, Sarah agrees to marry Phillip for the sake of her unborn child. The day of the wedding will change Sarah’s life in ways she never expected. Edmund Blackpool’s last thought was he was going to die without having married the love of his life. When he wakes up in a Flemish convent his constant thought is Sarah. Those thoughts push Edmund to heal so he can go home. Imagine his surprise when he arrives back in England to find Sarah is about to marry one of his best friends. What follows is wonderful tale of how two people try to make their way back to each other. You’ll cry for everything Edmund went through, admire Sarah’s strength when it comes to her baby, all the while wanting to smack their heads together so they’ll communicate. Although written with emotion, Erica Ridley throws in lots of humor (the baby scenes are particularly funny). A series book that can be read as a stand-alone but don’t deny yourself the pleasure all of Ms. Ridley’s Dukes of War stories! I’m (im)patiently waiting for the next!!!!

THE BRIGADIER’S RUNAWAY BRIDE is a love story for the ages, and Erica Ridley shines brighter than ever! Brigadier Edmund Blackpool was presumed dead in the war against Napoleon, leaving poor Sarah Fairfax alone, unmarried, and unfortunately pregnant. Her childhood friend, the Duke of Ravenwood proposed marriage, and she accepted for the sake of her unborn child. But as they had gathered with a few friends to get married, Edmund bursts into Ravenwood’s estate where the wedding was under way… THE BRIGADIER’S RUNAWAY BRIDE is book 5 in the splendid Dukes of War series, I have loved every previous book, and this might be the best one so far! I had been waiting a long time for Sarah’s story and it exceeds my wildest expectations, although it did not turn out the way I expected. Ms. Ridley concocted a very ingenious plot with clever twists, all of them plausible. THE BRIGADIER’S RUNAWAY BRIDE relates the story of young newlyweds, a young family in the Regency era, and I don’t believe I’ve ever read anything like it before, because the Blackpools aren’t rich, far from it. It also deals with Edmund’s adaptation to civilian life after the dreadful experience of war. THE BRIGADIER’S RUNAWAY BRIDE is superbly written, the prose is flawless, and the dialogues sound very realistic. Readers who have not read the previous books should not worry, because the necessary background information is subtly woven in by the author. THE BRIGADIER’S RUNAWAY BRIDE is a very quick read; I read it in one sitting because I simply couldn’t stop. The story is riveting, the characters supremely engaging, and character development is stellar. Ms. Ridley conveys the Sarah and Edmund’s emotions so well, I had tears in my eyes several times. I also loved the details of everyday life, such as a carriage accident, and there is an absolutely sublime seduction scene. THE BRIGADIER’S RUNAWAY BRIDE is one of the best historical romances I have ever read because Edmund and Sarah’s love story feels so real. THE BRIGADIER’S RUNAWAY BRIDE is excellence itself! I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
