What you will find in “The Burn Zone” … Interesting characters: * Sam is an intelligent, loyal, strong-willed young woman who doesn’t wait around for a man to take charge * Sam is also an addict and a survivor of streets (she has some baggage) * Nix is a member of the “alien hive”, but he is empathetic with humans and struggles with how to balance the needs of his race with those of humans, in particular, Sam * Vamp is Sam’s male friend, but he would like to be much more than friends (will it happen?) Lots of action: * Gun fights, High Tech style * Chases across a sprawling Chinese city of the future * Hand-to-hand urban combat * Some dismemberment (you aren’t squeamish, are you?) Cool High Tech: * Brain implants that allow people to interface directly with social media, no smart phone required * Removable storage devices, sort of like flash drives, that can store video feed of whatever the user is seeing * Flying cars and bikes * Gates that characters can use to go from one location in the city to another instantly (who needs the bus?) * Artificial Intelligence that targets individuals for direct marketing in public places (hopefully that never happens) * High Tech weapons Awesome Aliens: * Aliens who aren’t just humans with bumps on their heads. These aliens are intelligent, advanced technologically and very different from humans physically, mentally and culturally. A Great Story That Answers These Questions: * Why are the aliens on Earth? * Where did the aliens come from? * What is really going on between the Chinese government, the aliens and the rest of the world? * Is there a cover-up? * What are the aliens really up to? * Why do the aliens eat so much? (Actually, I’m still kind of wondering about this one.) Note: If you like this story, there is a prequel available called “Ember”, which is also very good. I can’t wait for book two in the series!

Highly recommended to fans of high concept sci fi. He builds an amazingly fascinating world.

While there was a little confusion at first about the history of the Haan, this book can be read as a stand alone. Sam Shao is an amazing character (although I kept picturing her with long hair for some reason).  When she is faced with the wrongful arrest and possible murder of her guardian, she hits the ground running, determined to find a way to get him back.  Of course, it can't be easy or we wouldn't have a book to read.  She must find a way to rely on a techno-geek almost on the wrong side of the law, and a mysterious Haan that isn't anything like what she has learned to expect from the alien creatures. What she unearths is so unexpected and exciting it was very difficult to put down.  The action came on page after page without overwhelming the reader and with just enough breaks to let me catch my breath (while Sam caught her's as well). With an epic, movie quality final showdown that includes exploding vehicles, car chases, cannibals, and a countdown to annihilation - the big reveal left me shocked, I didn't see it coming at all.  This is a definite must read for sci-fi fans.

The Burn Zone by James K. Decker is a very compelling read. Vivid imagery, strong characters, and an engrossing plot combine to bring this book to life. This story line never misses a beat. I was sitting on the edge of my seat...but oh, the ending. I cannot wait to continue this series.

A large, climbing tree stands with jagged branches and many places to fall.
