WOW! This is an introduction novella to the Shepherd series. It is an intense read that kept me on the edge of my seat. The book takes place immediately previous to The Shepherd (book 1 of the series) and ends a little abruptly. You will understand when you start The Shepherd why the ending was like that. Cross starts The Shepherd immediately where this book ends. Please note that the subject matter of this series is extremely intense and I would definitely not recommend this to a young reader. Cross writes with an intensity that is unmatched. Ackerman is one of the most terrifying characters I have ever encountered. If you are familiar with Chelsea Cain's character Gretchen Lowell, be prepared to meet her male counterpart. If intense thrillers are your thing, you cannot go wrong here. Be warned that this is NOT a full-length book, but it is an intro novella to an exceptional series. It is not a necessary read for the series (you could just start with the Shepherd), but it gives a great background to Ackerman and I was glad I started the series here. Thanx to Ethan Cross for a lost night of sleep! :~) -- SPeeD
