This is light, frolicking-type read; I was rolling my eyes and chuckling over the stupidity gullibility of Gwendolyn. But truly she is a delight, in all her clumsy, innocent manner. This whole story would never had happened if Evelyn, best friend to Gwen and sister of a duke, hadn’t accidentally gotten herself married, to a blacksmith, while betrothed to Stephan. Do I have your attention? You do not know the half of it. Early morning finds Gwen and Matthias, an earl, at Evelyn’s chamber door at the inn in this small town. Excerpt: Evelyn’s skirts were cast over her head as she straddled a handsome young gentleman. And what’s more, their legs were manacled together by a long chain. Shoving her skirts aside, Evelyn looked up at them both and smiled “Oh, good morning.” She laughed. “Was that you at the door, Gwen?” Gwen blinked several times, frozen in disbelief. What in the name of all that was good and holy had they walked in on? Matthias sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Good God, your brother will run me through with the first blunt object within reach. I’m standing here dead, as we speak.” More delightful dialog follows from Evelyn. …”All right, perhaps it’s precisely what it looks like, but I can explain.” She placed her hands on her hips and seemed to struggle with the words. “We were…you see.” She huffed out a breath. “Never mind. Perhaps I can’t explain.” ********** The story takes off in many directions at this point, making me just shake my head in disbelief, much like Gwen did. All is a tangle, Evelyn’s betrothed, Stephen may have been shot outside the inn, and Gwen’s maid, Emily, is gone missing with Stephen. Matthias insists they all wait for the duke to return from Bath before searching for Stephen and Emily, but Evelyn has something else in mind, even though, she outwardly agrees with him. [exit one angered and frustrated earl] Excerpt: Turning back around, she smiled at Gwen. “Gwen, darling, I need you to do something for me. I will be forever in your debt.” “Ach, lass, what are ye planning?” [this is from the blacksmith still manacled to Evelyn] Gwen narrowed her eyes at her friend. “I knew your cooperation was too good to be true. You are nothing if not stubborn. You acquiesced far too easily.” “I need you to keep Matthias occupied for a couple of days.” Gwen blinked several times. Evelyn said the words so casually Gwen though perhaps she had misheard. But somehow, she knew she hadn’t. “A couple of days? How in God’s name am I to do that” You may as well as me to hand you the moon.” ********** Gwen is more or less blackmailed into making this happen – she does the unthinkable – kidnaps one extremely virile, handsome earl. She pretty much reacts to the situation by the seat of her pants! She drugs Matthias and through several lies and luck, she is able to transport him to parts unknown in Scotland. By her reckoning she had everything she needs to stay in this little cottage with a man, tied to the bedposts of the only bed in the place. Here’s another cute excerpt: “Welcome,” she said in a heavy Scottish accent. “Is there aught ailing ye?” “Oh, no, it’s not for me.” Gwen struggled to think of a plausible lie. “My…husband… is having a great deal of trouble sleeping. Do you happen to have laudanum on hand?” [this is a lie—not her husband.] The woman nodded and if Gwen weren’t mistaken, she saw a knowing glimmer in her eyes. “I donna have laudanum. But I do have precisely what ye need

Gwendolyn Wilbraham will do anything to help her best friend even kidnap the Earl of Hastings. Matthias Hart is a rake who doesn't want to be tied to one woman, but Gwen intrigues him. She's beautiful and has a keen mind. What happens when she drugs him and makes him her prisoner? Why a passionate romantic tale, of course. Gwen is such an original. I loved her feisty nature. Matthias suffered as a result of the unhappy union of his parents. I understood why he vowed never to marry. Unfortunately for his peace of mind he can't resist Gwen. Now that they are married, I just wanted him to face his past and move forward. He and Gwen have something special. I wanted them to get their HEA. The characters are engaging and the dialogue draws you into the heart of the characters. I couldn't stop reading. There were times when I wanted to shake both characters for being so stubborn. I'm loving this series (What Happens In Scotland). Kate McKinley has an engaging writing style that makes the story flow smoothly. I'm a fan. I received a copy in exchange for an honest and unscripted review.

The Care and Feeding of Your Captive Earl (What Happens In Scotland #3) by Kate McKinley, but can be read as a stand alone. I would highly recommend reading the entire series, simply for the pleasure. See, #1, HOW TO LOSE A DUKE IN TEN DAYS (Lucas and Pippa) and #2, SO I MARRIED A HIGHLANDER (Alec and Evelyn). And of course, #3 THE CARE AND FEEDING OF YOUR CAPTIVE EARL (Gwen and Matthias). Matthias Hart, Earl of Hastings, one of London's most notorious rogues. Is about to meet the challenge of his life....Miss Gwendolyn Wrotham. Although, he's never been in such a precarious situation before, drugged, bound, and hidden away in a remote Scottish cottage. Thus, begins the story of Gwen and Matthias! A quick read, only about 197 some pages, but packed full of deliciousness and witty banter. What a great Regency Romance! Ms. McKinley has created a story with witty banter, mixed with some serious revelations, for both Gwen and Matthias. What a maelstrom of emotions, readers will find in Ms. McKinley's creative writing! The relationship between Gwen and Matthias is precarious, but was lonely and unfulfilled, before meeting each other. They have based their experience entirely on dysfunctional relationships, they have been associated with, until lately. Well written with engaging, well-developed, but flawed characters and families. The storyline is somewhat unique, masterfully written, emotionally charged with some laugh out loud moments, and a few twists and turns. A bit of mystery and a touch of suspense, makes for some mesmerizing and adventurous reading. Fans of Regency Romance, fun characters, fanciful longings, determination, mistaken identity, and a misunderstand or two with a most misbehaving Earl, I believe will enjoy "The Care and Feeding of Your Captive Earl". Ms. McKinley is an amazing, masterful storyteller, who draws the reader into the story and captures their hearts. A must read Regency Romance with witty banter and interesting characters. I can't wait for the next adventure from Ms. McKinley! Received for an honest review. However, all opinions and thoughts are my own. Rating: 4.5 Heat rating: Mild Reviewed by: AprilR

Incompetent. A word Miss Gwendolyn Wrotham has heard her entire life. And clumsy, something her best friend often reminds her. So what could possibly go wrong when she plans the kidnapping of the Earl of Hastings to keep him out of her best friend’s way for a while. When laudanum, rope, and a handsome rogue are involved the results comical. Revenge is what Matthias Hart, Earl of Hastings, has in mind when he wakes and finds he has been drugged, tied up and held captive. The fact that his captor is young and innocent will not alter his plans. Until he gets a look into the girl behind the front she presents to the world. A wonderful story that had me laughing, sympathizing, and falling in love right along with Gwendolyn and when Matthias comes to her defense in front of her father…definitely one of the MANY good parts of this story. Watching the layers being peeled back on a notorious rogue is always entertaining and Kate McKinley did this with finesse. This is the first book by Kate McKinley that I have read and I have to say I am hooked.

Kate McKinley's The Care and Feeding of Your Captive Earl, book three in her What Happens In Scotland series, shows what happens when two people let go and open their hearts after years of secretly longing for each other. Talk about grabbing the audience's undivided attention, this work with it's lively banter mixed in with serious revelations will keep readers on their toes as they ride the maelstrom of warring emotions that are artfully depicted by Ms. McKinley's fine writing. The dynamic between the hero and heroine, who have consigned themselves to lonely and unfulfilled lives based on past examples of dysfunctional relationships, was well developed and moved this story along nicely. Just the right of amount of humor balanced grave circumstances without distracting from more serious plot points. Ethical and naughty vie for top billing as the leads fight to contain their heated attraction and temper it with their personal misgivings and natural inclination to do right. This is the kind of story that historical romance readers will love and leave them craving more from this extremely entertaining author! *While this book is part of series it can be read as a stand alone.* *I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.*
