Overview

When Eric James Donovan, a carpenter by trade and former black ops squad leader, distraught from the ravages of the Great Recession, is offered a Faustian bargain, he discovers "anyone will do anything if they are tempted enough or desperate enough." Eric accepts the deal from a dark figure calling himself a mediator and plans an assassination of a powerful real estate scammer and billionaire. Eric has never failed in any of his missions for his country. His weapon of choice is a powerful neurotoxin, TTX. Eric violates his principles and risks everything to carry out the assignment. After an introduction to a seductive criminal defense attorney involved in bi sexual encounters, murder for profit and underworld clientele, Eric has moments of despair and seeks out counseling by the family priest. Father Tom, a retread with a surreptitious past, knows Eric better than his own father and guides Eric in a disturbing manner for a Father Confessor. Everything falls into place for Eric to have the opportunity to complete his project. As you learn about Eric and his plight from dealing with death to financial ruin, you sense righteousness. He reluctantly exchanges his convictions for new pleasures. When informed by the mediator, "Nothing is ever as it seems, nor is it otherwise" we are exposed to the twists, turns and unexpected connections of all of the characters in this dark and edgy tale. This is the first book in The Blue Collar Assassin Series.

The Carpenter is an exciting journey through mystery and suspense as we follow Eric on his newly paved path. Author Max Myllan delivers an excellent first story in The Blue Collar Assassination Series. Eric Donovan is a likable character. After serving his country Eric settles down with his college sweetheart, Aimee, in Florida. After his wife Aimee dies and the economy declines Eric suffers a series of setbacks including financial ones. Even though Eric thought he wouldn’t be able to love again he married Tiana a couple years after Aimee’s death. Eric suffers more heartache as Tiana dies also after a hard marriage.  Eric suffers this all in silence until finally he opens up to his father and allows it all to come out. Eric is in deep with the sharks and behind in all his bills. He is holding on by a rapidly fraying thread. This is when the mediator offers Eric an enticing opportunity to use his skills from the military to his monetary advantage. Eric has little time to consider the offer and feels the pressure. Myllan takes us on a thrilling ride through the choices Eric must make to secure his future. There are interesting characters along the way and a secretive undertone. Myllan takes us on many twists and turns before arriving at the shocking conclusion.  I love that Myllan’s writing is thorough and well researched. I learned a lot of interesting facts in an entertaining way through this book. It is obvious Myllan put forth tremendous effort into getting it right. I highly recommend it and eagerly await the next installment of The Blue Collar Assassination Series!

Gritty, Intense and Intriguing Right from the start ''The Carpenter'' managed to suck me in and take me on a thrilling, dark and gritty ride... delving deep into the darker side of humanity, desperation and the shadowy element of murder and coercion. Max Myllan has crafted a twisted tale, drawing readers into the life of Eric Donovan a man of conviction who has served his country with distinguish, but when times are tough he gives in to desperation when a man known only as the Negotiator approaches him with the means to get his life back on track... for a price. Eric's life in turned upside down from there on, taking him on twists and turns, through morality, disparity, emotional drama and danger. The well-written novel has a sharp and lush element to it that really sets the tone fantastically, making you feel Eric's desperation and indecision as he wavers on his path. It's fast-paced, exciting, emotionally charged and engaging... overall, it was very entertaining and I would definitely recommend it to readers looking for a thrilling novel to sink their teeth into.

This is a story about choices and about the realization that people are not always who they appear to be. Eric Donovan is a carpenter down on his luck forced to work for daily wages in conditions that are not always safe. Just when he feels he can no longer hold on, he is summoned to a mysterious interview. He is sure that his background in custom carpentry caught someone’s attention and that he is surely being considered for some type of project management position. The fact that this and the following interview took place in two totally unconventional locations should have been a big clue. Pretty soon Eric is involved with women, deception, a Project, and a man only known as the Mediator, who works for the Architect. Eric is also a previous black ops member with specials skills from his days in the military. His new job has more to do with those skills than with his mastery as a carpenter. After the initial shock upon hearing the details of his assignment, he makes a choice that changes his life forever. There is someone special in his life, money is abundant, and he can finish the job with no sweat, while at the same time taking care of a very shady character. Join Eric as this story twists and turns in ways you would never imagine. Through it all, Eric is surrounded by friends and more family than he even knows. The Project is completed, which should be the end of the story, but it turns out to be just the beginning of a heart thumping page turner. When all is said and done, everything and just about everyone in this story comes around full circle, so get ready for the biggest surprise of your reading life! It turns out that Eric’s assignment was much more about his development as a human being than anything else. I recommend this book highly because it reminded me that life is not always about money, but about viewing life as something sacred. It was intriguing right from the beginning and it only got better for me. It also re-enforced the idea of what people will do for self-preservation or to protect their loved ones. Even more than that, I absolutely loved the ending. It did seem a little unbelievable, but I still loved it anyway. Do not miss this one!

This book is full of action and adventure! It is incredibly well written with lots of twists and turns. The story follows a man who has had some rough times, financial and personal problems. The next thing you know he is hired to take out a slimy billionaire business man. I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but lets just say you won't be able to put this book down!

The Carpetener Eric Donovan is a man who is down on his luck. He has loan sharks and bill collectors closing in on him. He also has to deal with the aftermath of a string of deaths within the family. A mysterious customer contacts him for a job, but chooses rather seedy locations in order to conduct anonymous business. As Eric's problems become to much to bear his father suggests that he calls up a man that owes a favor. Eric is taken on an exciting ride for the rest of the book, finding out more about the illegal underground than he ever imagined. Nothing in this world is as it seems. Nearly everyone in this book has a secret. I enjoyed the fleshed out characters and detailed descriptions of the Donovan men's past. Max Myllan provides a great novel that will captivate your attention as you watch Eric Donovan unravel the mysteries he encounters and how he becomes wrapped up in the world of shadows that these characters would rather keep hidden.

What a brilliantly written captivating story. My dad recommended I read this book, and he has never once before recommended any book to me. The plan was to flip to thru the pages and have a glance of what the book was about. I soon after found myself reading the first chapters, and an hour later I was still there. I’m a military girl myself and I must say this book is so realistic and cleverly written, I had to pause at times and just look around to snap back to reality. Not often am so I’m profoundly moved by a work of fiction, the author has truly done his homework and delivered a fast pace military action thriller I can’t rate less than 5 stars.

In “The Carpenter,” Eric Donovan is a war veteran who has been struggling to make ends meet—at least until he is recruited for a mysterious Project, assigned by a man known only as the Mediator and ordered by an unknown Architect.  The Project is the murder of a real state and business mogul, and it turns out that perhaps no one is a better assassin for the job than Eric, given his particular specialization in the Army. However, Eric is spiritually torn by the task he’s taken on, and he turns to an old childhood friend and family priest, Father Tom, for guidance. Eric has 90 days to get close enough to the target to carry out the task—and along the way he will connect with a beautiful (and kinky) woman through social media, make friends in unexpected places, and battle some of his own demons left over from past relationships and the war.  I enjoyed “The Carpenter”—it’s a good blend of suspense and action, with a little humor thrown in as well (for instance, the Project is assigned at the Pink Banana Gentleman’s Club…). I liked the mystery surrounding what Eric did in the army, and how it ties into the plot as his role in “quiet deaths” is slowly revealed. That Eric was conflicted about the job deepens his character—his personal struggle is set up well, and it makes you think about what you would do when offered $1 million to take out someone who is a terrible person and who has more than one enemy who would willingly do the same for free. Father Tom’s motivations also add another interesting layer of mystery to the novel, and the reasons behind them led to a satisfying conclusion for me as a reader.  I would recommend “The Carpenter” to readers who are looking for an entertaining suspense novel that has action but isn’t too graphic, and has likeable characters and a well-executed premise.

Fabulously unique and captivating! The Carpenter features a once-commando, now-laborer named Eric Donovan whose life is turned upside down after he accepts a deal whose depth he could never have imagined. The novel jumps right in with fast-paced action and thrills, and doesn't stop until the bitter end as the mysteries surrounding Eric's co-conspirators and indeed the mysteries in his own head begin to unfold. Morally taxing, the novel skillfully leads the reader toward the nail-biting conclusion when the truth is finally revealed and Eric is left reeling. If you enjoy fast-moving, military/crime thrillers with philosophical undertones and momentous revelations, consider The Carpenter a must-read.
