The Case Of The Missing Formula

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-- A series that blends personal problems, interpersonal relationships, and mystery. Ten-year-old Jason describes the gang's newest case and his struggle to deal with his parents' separation. Someone has picked the lock to Mr. Portalupi's food lab and has stolen two cases of his latest invention--a low-calorie chocolate-malted soda pop. Attention shifts between Jason's attempts to deal with mounting tensions at home and the gang's efforts to track down leads. The case culminates in a hair-raising chase that nearly costs Jason his life. As a result, he realizes his need for his parents and begins to let go of his anger. Gilligan uses minimal characterization for all but the main character and relies on a fast-paced plot enhanced by emotional tension to engross novice mystery readers. One jarring note occurs when the gang decides to confront the thief; while it leads to a dramatic conclusion, it doesn't ring true. Not a first purchase, but useful where mysteries are in great demand. --Maggie McEwen, Coffin Elementary School, Brunswick, ME
