About the Author

The history of Lilian Jackson Braun is perhaps as exciting and mysterious as her novels. Between 1966 and 1968, she published three novels to critical acclaim: The Cat Who Could Read Backwards, The Cat Who Ate Danish Modern, and The Cat Who Turned On and Off.  In 1966, the New York Times labeled Braun, “the new detective of the year.” Then, for reasons unknown, the rising mystery author disappeared from the publishing scene. It wasn’t until 1986 that Berkley Publishing Group reintroduced Braun to the public with the publication of an original paperback, The Cat Who Saw Red. Within two years, Berkley released four new novels in paperback and reprinted the three mysteries from the sixties. Since then, G.P. Putnam’s Sons has published seventeen additional novels in the Cat Who series. Braun passed away in 2011.

Just how smart is a cat? Well Koko knows Shakespeare it seems, enough to try to use it as a warning to Qwilleran about what is going on around him. But as usual, cats never get taken seriously. After a local printer is killed, the mystery begins in the small town of Picax. A widows desperate to sell her husbands life away, a young publisher who gets attacked, a museum burnt down, it s all far too coincidental for Qwilleran and his friends. And Koko keeps warming him, but will Koko¿s warnings come too late?

Lilian Jackson Braun outdid herself in this fanciful book. As always Qwil is there but better than ever is Koko's curiosity and clever direction to solving the mystery.

Why four you ask? First of all the book was really good and I thought if it was an assignment for a class, it would be in the A or B range. One problem that I had, was in a few spots it got a little too dry for me. There just wasn't enough content to keep my interest. Another reason that it wasn't a perfect score was the fact that some of the characters' emotions don't seem to fit the situation. There was a point that really sticks out to me as being just weird. A character looses something important and just lets it roll of his/her back like it was no big deal. The thing at really pulled me into this book though was the fact that it was a mystery. I was kept guessing the whole time and there were no gross descriptions in it that could turn my stomach. It was a good old-fashioned mystery with a little twist like the other, 'The Cat Who¿' books.

Senior goodwinter has had a car accident off of an old plank bridge, but is it suicide or murder? Qwill's cat Koko has a strange taste for the book by Shakespeare, the 'Hamlet'. Could it be Polly who loves Shakespeare who caused the accident....You will never guess who until one sentence near the end. READ THIS BOOK!!
