Just finished Donald Kirch's "The Christ Project" and wow!! A compelling piece of storytelling. I found myself spellbound by the tale of one man's perseverance against impossible odds in the cause of saving God on Earth. Post "Great War" Earth is not a tolerant world. Set in the distant future, Earth is a police state governed by the United Nations with NATO enforcing their rule. Religion and God are outlawed. Privacy is scarce as the robotic eyes and ears of those in power are everywhere. The question that drives the book forward is whether a world devoid of faith can be given something to believe in again. One man intends to make that happen. Our hero, Marcellus, is an intriguing blend of former geneticist turn Catholic priest who rose through the ranks to nearly the pinnacle of church hierarchy before the war. In war's aftermath, he dared to commit the crime of conducting Christmas Mass and sentenced to 20 years hard labor. It's at his release that our story kicks off. The adventure never stops. Twists, turns, intrigue, close calls, miraculous saves, and steadfast belief in a power greater than ourselves accompanies Marcellus on his quest. Kirch's crisp, succinct style moves the story forward at a satisfying pace, yet he doesn't sacrifice character development or ambiance. His believable, dimensional characters have you either loving them, praying for them, or loathing them. What surprised and fascinated was the anger that the story ignited in me as a reader - anger at the devastation of war, anger at those who used the "evils" of religion as an excuse for godless tyranny, ire at forces that imposed a police state as humanity's best future, and despair at the resulting withering of the human spirit. This book is a frightening vision of a future that I could see becoming reality all too easily. One of my favorite passages was the Templar King's words to Marcellus: "The woman...believes! Belief is a dangerous, if not, wonderful power. To have it focused on you is a wonderful and exciting thing. It is not often that people center their hope on another. You need to embrace that, my friend." That sentiment so summoned up what I thought the book was about - the loss and then rediscovery of something to believe in greater and more powerful than ourselves.

Following the 30-year conflict known as The Great War, the citizens of the world are all subject to the control of The United Nations, which uses what's left of NATO to enforce its constrictive laws. Chief among them: the complete outlawing of all religions, which was cited as the cause of the extended global conflict that nearly destroyed the entire world. Into this oppressive society emerges Marcellus, a former high-ranking Bishop of the Catholic Church fresh off a 20-year bid for leading a Christmas Mass. Unbowed by society's efforts to cower him into virtual slavery, Marcellus is determined to re-launch The Christ Project, a long-abandoned attempt by an all-but-extinguished underground resistance to topple the New World Order that the UN has created. As his crusade unfolds, Marcellus makes invaluable friends and dangerous enemies - but nothing can prepare him for just what the future has in store for him - and the entire world... Riveting, dramatic, and action-packed, The Christ Project is a bona fide instant classic. In his imaginative fast-paced thriller, author Donald Allen Kirch combines outstanding character development, an engrossing plotline, and nerve-wracking suspense to form a superbly crafted tale. Furthermore, Kirch's masterful use of religious history and symbolism lends his story an added element of refreshing, genuine authenticity. With a captivating storyline and superior storytelling, The Christ Project is sure to keep readers turning page after page in breathless anticipation. A can't miss thriller from an impressive literary talent. Josee Morgan Apex Reviews

This book was a fun read! I was greatly impressed with the way this author made we not want to put this book down. This is a story that so fits our time. In this plot, religion has been used to do terrible things, and has been outlawed by the United Nations. What would we all do if we could no longer talk with our God? In this book, the author answers that through his main character, Marcellus. The story is so filled with imagination, thought, and emotion, that at times I was overwhelmed! I would recommend this book to anyone who loved the Left Behind series, and hope that this book is only the begining for this author!
