Overview

The Civil War in Color: A Photographic Reenactment of the War Between the States by John C Guntzelman

“These photos are no longer just dusty old pictures, but rather have become very real moments in time from our collective past, frozen forever in color.”--John C. Guntzelman The Civil War comes alive as never before in this extraordinary collection of colorized photographs from the era. Not only does it feature portraits of famous leaders and ordinary soldiers but also vignettes of American life during the conflict: scenes from urban and plantation life; destroyed cities; contested battlefields. The 200+ photographs, from the Library of Congress's archives, include both well-known and rarely seen images.  Also inside--a fine art ready-to-frame photographic print of a stunning colorized Civil War photograph.

Here’s a book that far exceeds the simplicity of its title. It’s as much art as it is history, powerfully conveying the sensibility of the times as well the people and events portrayed. For me, the choice of photographs, their coloring, framing and layout, the captions, and the text works together to heighten the reality of the Civil War. In many instances, seeing the black & white photos juxtaposed against the colorized version was especially powerful. Where the original images feel flat and lifeless, the color images breathe life into them. The poignancy and and immediacy that the images evoked took me by surprise. It seemed the images in color were taken in the recent past, rather than the distant past. The war became more real. Guntzelman’s description of his approach to colorizing the photos, including the painstaking research he undertook to maximize integrity to the colors—eye and hair colors, the color of cloth and dyes available then, even the difference between a color in shade and in bright sunlight—indicate that this was a labor of love by a highly skilled artist. I highly recommend it, for the photographs and the information it provides—which is detailed and extensive—but mostly because it moved me.

A true look at what our ancestors went through to gain freedom. Believe me I was quite surprised that this is what an 11yr old child that suffers from ADHD really wanted.

Really great buy for anyone interested in the American Civil War. The book has colorized portraits of major Civil War generals, as well as Lincoln and Davis. Guntzelman did impressive work; easily my favorite part of the book. Plenty of images showing the destruction of the war, slaves, and a few images of the soldiers and their camps. Lots of Union photos, not so many Confederate photos. The most powerful images showed deceased soldiers, both Union and Confederate. These images really bring out the harsh brutality of the war, and will definitely change the way you think about the conflict. One of the biggest things for me was the size of the book. The book is quite big, and I love it. There is a lot of room and space to display Guntzelman's impressive work so you can really enjoy each and every piece. I would really recommend this to anyone who enjoys the Civil War era.
