Cockroaches (Harry Hole Series #2) by Jo Nesbo

In this #1 New York Times bestseller, Inspector Harry Hole heads to Thailand to investigate the murder of an ambassador. Look out for the latest Harry Hole novel, The Thirstavailable now.

When the Norwegian ambassador to Thailand is found dead in a Bangkok brothel, Inspector Harry Hole is dispatched from Oslo to help hush up the case.
But once he arrives Harry discovers that this case is about much more than one random murder. There is something else, something more pervasive, scrabbling around behind the scenes. Or, put another way, for every cockroach you see in your hotel room, there are hundreds behind the walls. Surrounded by round-the-clock traffic noise, Harry wanders the streets of Bangkok lined with go-go bars, temples, opium dens, and tourist traps, trying to piece together the story of the ambassador’s death even though no one asked him to, and no one wants him to—not even Harry himself.

These books are becoming available in English out of order! I love the Harry Hole books and have read them all. If you like them, you really need to read this one, too. Jo Nesbo is a really good author and keeps you on your toes to the very end of the book.

I am just finishing up this book and I know there is yet another stone left unturned that will be exposed before I finish this book! The character Harry Hole is someone I latched onto automatically & held on for all 10 books he is featured in. I am not sorry! I have 2 more to read and am looking forward to more adventure, mystery and enjoyment!

The Harry Hole series presently consists of 10 novels, of which this was the second, published in the US in February 2014 for the first time. (The newest book, “The Son,” is due out in the UK in April 2014 and in the US in May 2014.) In the introductory novel, Harry was sent to Australia to solve a murder. This time he was selected to travel to Thailand where the Norwegian ambassador had been found knifed to death in a motel/brothel. Harry was handpicked by the powers-to-be in their effort to hush up any possible scandal back home, on the theory that he is a drunk and would not be able to solve the murder. Once in Bangkok, Harry finds out he has not been fully informed and is operating in a vacuum (as was intended). As he begins to investigate he uncovers more and more information trying to make sense out of the situation. The setting gives the author an opportunity to describe the traffic, noise, streets, bars, temples, tourist traps and opium dens in authentic detail, while following Harry’s efforts to solve the ambassador’s murder. Although Harry was supposed to “bury” the crime, the author concludes with a totally unexpected finale. As has been the case with each of this author’s books, this one too is highly recommended.

Really like this series. At times I wasn't sure I was following the entire story but then it all came together. I feel bad for Harry -- lots of tragedy in his life personally. You'd expect some of it being a police officer but it seems as if life is even more tragic than necessary. Not a fan of the last chapter here. I hope it's not what's in store for Harry and the rest of the series.

The reason I ordered this book was because I so enjoyed the first book in the series, The Bat. This one was OK but, in my opinion, it was not as good as The Bat. I really like this author and will continue with the Harry Hole series.

As a long time fan of Nesbo I have been interested in the publication of his earlier works. His first book, "The bat" I thought was ok but the writing wasn't that good. I was very pleased when I read "Cockroaches." The plot was typical Harry Hole and the writing was much improved from the first book. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to Nesbo's next book!
