About the Author

Horatio Alger, Jr. (1832-1899) was an American writer best known for his "rags to riches" stories of young boys rising from poverty to respectable middle-class lives through thrift, industry, hard work, and determination. Born in Massachusetts, Alger attended Harvard and worked as an editor and educator before graduating divinity school in 1860. He became a Unitarian minister in 1864 but left under a cloud two years later, accused of sexual misconduct. After moving to New York, Alger found lasting success as a writer of novels for young boys. While formulaic, the novels were extremely popular during the closing decades of the 19th century.
