This installment of the Naxos Great Violinists series is devoted to Fritz Kreisler's famous 1926 versions of the Beethoven and Mendelssohn concertos with the Berlin State Opera Orchestra conducted by Leo Blech. In spite of their technical and mechanical imperfections -- the recorded sound was fairly dingy even by early electrical standards, and by the mid-1920s the violinist's famous aversion to regular practice was really beginning to show -- these justly famous readings are my desert island recordings of both works: performances of such patrician grace and glowing warmth that their abundant musical and human virtues remain undiminished after three quarters of a century. Predictably, the transfers by Mark Obert-Thorn are the best we have ever been given.
