Even though I bought this book for my granddaughter, I learned a lot myself! The recipes are marked as easy, medium, or advanced and a mix of tastes for simple and more advanced palettes. It even includes recommendations for tools like proper knives and cutting techniques. If you get this book, I'd also highly recommend that you buy, buy a copy of Chef Jai Scovers' cookbook reference guide entitled "Conquer Your Kitchen." In "Conquer Your Kitchen," Chef Jai reveals a wealth of information to save time and money in the kitchen, including the difference between baking soda and baking powder. Also how long raw eggs will last in your refrigerator. She reveals what is "resting time" and even, the proper temperature to cook chicken? It is all about safety for our little ones, making both books an amazing gift idea for every young chef and their parents to share!
Because this book was written by America's Test Kitchen, it was tested with over 750 kids to make sure the recipes were kid friendly- that right there is the best selling point for me. Throughout the book are comments on the recipes from the testers, giving helpful feedback from a kid's point of view- there are even product reviews, which is nice. The instructions are clear and explained thoroughly, without talking down to kids, and the recipes are good, healthy fare that most eaters will like, with suggestions for customizing to suit different tastes. Lots of photographs are spread throughout, basic techniques are covered, and there's a nice section on nutrition in the back. A great gift for aspiring chefs of all skill levels!
I purchase this cookbook for my 7 year old niece for Christmas (she loves to cook & bake). I like this junior cookbook because the directions are clear and easy, and they also offer substitute ingredients. They have pictures and step by step instruction that is easy for a children to understand. This pass weekend she made the strawberry shortcake and it turned out great!
