Since Kat Waters’s father took a trip to the slammer on what she’s sure are trumped-up racketeering charges, life’s been tough. All their assets are frozen, and she’s down to the last few pairs of Jimmy Choos she can swap for rent. To keep her family out of the homeless shelter, the former socialite took a job at the local morgue—a job she’s about to lose when the body of a murder victim goes missing on her watch.

While Kat’s processing the latest victim in the prostitute serial killings, ex-Special Forces soldier Burns McPhee strolls in with an air of confidence, expecting access to the Jane Doe. While Burns tries to flirt his way into examining the latest victim, whom he thinks is connected to the death of his best friend, someone else steals the body right out from under them.

Dodging questions from the cops and kidnapping attempts from a body-snatching psycho, Kat and Burns forge a deal. He’ll clear her name and keep her safe if she gets him information on her peculiar coworkers, one of whom he’s certain is involved with the body heist. But digging up secrets can lead to a lower life expectancy. The unlikely team will need all their talents not to end up as the morgue’s next clients while they hunt for a murderer, the missing corpse, and a pair of diamond-studded stilettos.

An intricate mystery with interesting characters, humor and a touch of romance. This combination makes for a fun and complex story that will leave you wanting more. The cliff hanger ending helps.

The Corpse Wore Stilettos is M.J. O’Neill’s debut novel. This is a fun, cozy mystery about Kat Waters who works in a morgue and one night one of the bodies she is working on is stolen. Kat pairs up with DC who works with her and Burns McPhee who owns a security company who happened to also be in the morgue the night the corpse was stolen. Kat’s family was wealthy until her father was arrested for racketeering and being involved with the mafia. Kat gets a job at the morgue to help support her mother and grandmother until they solve what is going on with her father. I loved all of the quirky characters in this book especially Grand, Kat’s grandmother. She was such a kook, and I loved the scenes she was in. I am a big fan of cozy mysteries, and this one did not disappoint. I didn’t figure out the ending, but I did know one character would be involved, but I won’t give away any spoilers. I’m looking forward to the sequel especially because this one ended with a cliff hanger. Plus, I want to see what happens with Kat and Burns. O'Neill did a great job of keeping the readers interested so that they'll continue with the series. I received an advanced copy of this book from BookSirens in exchange for my honest review.

MJ O’Neill’s The Corpse Wore Stilettos Intriguing, suspenseful, dynamic suspense starting with the stealing of a body from the morgue. Kat Waters whose current job is assisting the Medical Examiner is on duty when a corpse wearing stilettos arrives. Soon after her arrival, Kat is confronted by a mysterious, Former Special Ops operator who now Runs his own security firm. He expects to examine the body before the Medical Examiner. Will he is trying to convince Kat to allow this someone breaks into the morgue and steals the corpse wearing the stilettos. The chase is on....... Kat is only working in the morgue due to the arrest of her father for racketeering. His assets were frozen. Therefore Kat needs to provide money for her mother, grandmother and herself to be able to live. Now she is put on probation. She decides to find this security man who denied her story to find out what is going on. Little did she know she would find herself in the investigation of dead prostitutes, a dead reporter and a crazy Russian stalker who goes from snatching the body to sending Kat flowers, notes and calling her. You will meet an array of well created, well defined, vivid, quirky and unconventional characters to keep you thoroughly engrossed. The story is very detail oriented making the reader feel as if they are part of this uniquely plotted story. A Highly Recommended Read. I volunteered to read The Corpse Wore Stilettos. Thanks to Book Sirens for the opportunity. My opinion is my own. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Great mystery with plenty of intricate plotting and details. The descriptions are crisp, the writing style flows. I loved the dialog and the main character's slick sarcasm. Her family is colorful, especially Grand whose attitude could rival anyone's half her age. Honestly, this has shades of Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, only with a bit more sophistication. Technical expertise (I'm reading the author's bio) include details that are genuine. The only drawback for me was how long it took me to get into the story--I think because of so much detail slowing down the plot. Of course, I am rather impatient, so it could just be me. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A funny and witty mystery by Ms. O’Neill. The dialog kept me laughing while I followed along with the exploits of Katherine “Kat” Waters. Kat’s father was arrested for fraud and money laundering which has greatly reduced the family resources…to almost zero. Kat has found work in the county morgue and thankfully her minor degree in biology has finally paid off. One night when she receives the body of a young woman, three men break in to the morgue; two who want to see the body and one who steals the body. How could the police possibly believe that she had something to do with the theft? Kat is smarter than people give her credit for and with the help of former Special Forces Burns McPhee (he only wanted to see the body) he will keep Kat safe. From her laugh out loud explanations, her pet pig and her Mom and Grand, this was a delightful read. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review.
