The Dangerous Animals Club by Stephen Tobolowsky

From legendary character actor Stephen Tobolowsky, comes a collection of memoiristic pieces about life, love, acting, and adventure, told with a beguiling voice and an uncommon talent for storytelling.

The Dangerous Animals Club by Stephen Tobolowsky is a series of stories that form a non-linear autobiography. Each story stands on its own, and yet there are larger interconnecting narratives that weave together from the book's beginning to end. The stories have heroics and embarrassments, riotous humor and pathos, characters that range from Bubbles the Pigmy Hippo to Stephen's unforgettable mother, and scenes that include coke-fueled parties, Hollywood sets, French trains, and hospital rooms.

Told in a vivid, honest, and wondrous voice, Tobolowsky manages to render the majestic out of the seemingly mundane, profundity from the patently absurd, and grace from tragedy. This book marks the debut of a massively talented storyteller.

This man is an absolutely incredible storyteller.  I first heard him on NPR, telling stories in his meandering way, with such amazing honesty and wonderful voice.  I was spellbound.  He's touching, funny, and perfectly human.  He has an ability to weave a story and entertain in a way like nobody else I've ever encountered.  I was a bit tentative about a written version, since I was afraid it would lose something important without his voice, but I found that while reading it, I was hearing it in his unique voice.  He's made me laugh and tear up at the oddest things and makes me think about life in a different way.  This really is the best kind of entertainment.   If you pick this up without having heard any of his recordings, I suggest you give at least one recording a try so you will be able to hear it in your head in his voice, too. :)

Something about the short biographical stories Mr. Tobolowsky tells have me just rivetted. I'd heard most of these already on his podcast but sometimes you miss things when just listening. Reading these stories was refreshing and awesome all at once. I recommend this book and his podcast to everyone I speak to, even trying to work it into any conversation; no matter how random. He has a way if looking at the world and relating that in such a way that when he is telling his point of view it never comes across as preachy. Its just the opinion and philosophy of someone who has lived a life and learned from every aspect of it. Now he is just passing it along for anyone who wants to hear it. Buy it, read it, enjoy it. You will, trust me.
