Overview

From the imagination of New York Times bestselling author, E.G. Foley, comes Book Three in The Gryphon Chronicles, a rollicking, adventure-filled, historical fantasy series (with a hint of steampunk!) that's as much fun for grownups as it is for kids.

The Pickpocket Who Inherited a Goldmine
After his harsh beginnings as a rough-and-tumble orphan on the streets of London, Jake Everton takes his rightful place as the long-lost heir of an aristocratic family with magical powers – his personal quest, to follow in his slain parents' footsteps as a Lightrider in the age-old battle of good versus evil. In the fantastical nooks and crannies of the Victorian Age, Jake and his friends (including his pet Gryphon!) find no shortage of adventure – righting magic-related wrongs, solving supernatural mysteries, and exploring wondrous new worlds.

A Dark Presence...
Something stalks a quaint town in the misty mountains of Wales, attacking humans and magic folk alike. Jake and his friends must get to the bottom of it – and in the land of deep, dwarven mines, the bottom can be very dark, indeed.

"A wonderful novel in the same vein as Harry Potter, full of nonstop action, magical creatures, and the reality that was Queen Victoria's England." –The Reading Café

Meet the Author

E.G. Foley is the pen name for a husband-and-wife writing team who live in Pennsylvania. They have been finishing each other’s sentences since they were teens, so it was only a matter of time before they were writing together, too.

They are the authors of “The Gryphon Chronicles” historical fantasy adventure series (The Lost Heir, Jake and the Giant, The Dark Portal), as well as a contemporary series of shorter books called, “The United States of Ahhhh!-merica: 50 States of Fear” – spooky stories for kids set in all fifty states.

“E” is a 7-8th grade teacher of students who regularly use more than 10% of their brains, world traveler, ice cream connoisseur, and martial arts enthusiast. “G” loves big books and small fluffy creatures, and if she hadn’t become a writer, would have pursued a career as either a princess or spy—or possibly both. With millions of copies of her nineteen adult novels from Random House and HarperCollins sold in sixteen languages worldwide, she has been hitting bestseller lists regularly for the past decade.

THE GRYPHON CHRONICLES: THE DARK PORTAL by E. G. Foley is a fantastic Fantasy/Fiction/ Adventure for Young Readers, ages 10 & up set in Victorian era. #3 in "The Gryphon Chronicles" but can be read as a stand alone. However, I would suggest reading the other two in this series, only because it is an awesome series! See, "The Lost Heir" and "Jake and the Giant". An ex-pickpocket and orphan becomes an heir! Jake Everton, heir of Griffon finds himself and his friends in Wales,on this adventure, where something in attacking humans and the magic folk. Deep within a Dwarven mine, things go bump in the night, and good vs evil. Filled with yet more adventure for Jake and his friends. It also has Dwarfs, fairies, unicorns, mystery, magic, supernatural mysteries, and righting wrongs, Jake also wants to follow in his parents footsteps, and become a Lightrider. Oh yeah, have I mentioned he has a pet Gryphon! Jake's first year with a family for Christmas is coming up soon! What will be his next grand adventure, I wonder. I will have to keep reading to find out,I suppose. But do be warned, some parts may be a bit scary for younger readers,so if they are reading alone, check on them often. Well written with engaging characters, as the story continues you see new characters, with more magic and more adventures for Jake and his friends. If you enjoy Harry Potter, or maybe even Fairy Tales, you will enjoy "The Gryphon Chronicles". This is an awesome series, from the first book to this one, no mistaking this author's writing skills. What a fantastic job of storytelling as the adventure continues! I have enjoyed this series and look forward to the next grand adventure. Received for an honest review from the author. RATING: 4 HEAT RATING: NONE to a bit scary, maybe, for younger readers REVIEWED BY: AprilR, Courtesy of My Book Addiction and More

THE DARK PORTAL is the 3rd book of THE GRYPHON CHRONICLES by E. G. Foley. This time Jake and the gang travel to Wales to see Jake's estate and gold mine. While there Jake sees ghosts who haunt the mine school. While the ghosts do not have much faith in Jake's abilities it is up to him to discover why there is a pall over the school and how to handle it. I enjoyed this story. I got caught up in it and wanted to know more of what was happening in Wales. I liked how more supernatural folk are introduced into the series. This time Jake meets the house brownies who take care of his estate when he is not there. He also meets the dwarves who mine the gold in his mine. There are also supernatural folk who Jake does not want to meet but does as he defends his friends and solves the mystery surrounding the school. I like how Jake has to make choices of when to reveal his magic and to whom. His reasoning is thoughtful and deliberate. He is growing up somewhat. Jake and his friends defending the unicorn herd in Wales is not something they take lightly. They know what is at stake and the importance of doing what is necessary. When Jake discovers another medium in town I like how he goes undercover (so to speak) to discover if the medium is a fraud. I also like how Jake has to swallow his outrage when she discovers who Jake is. I enjoy these people especially Jake, Archie, Dani, and Isabelle. They are kids but they are responsible and know their duty to protect others.
