Read an Excerpt

The Day of the Dead is celebrated with a special zeal in many areas with large indigenous populations, such as Oaxaca and Michoacán, Mexico. As these are also regions that are renowned for their rich and vibrant folk art traditions, some of the most spectacular works of art in honor of the holiday have been produced by artisans in these areas. With the art they create for the Day of the Dead, the artists offer us a window into the cultural traditions associated with the holiday along with a subtle reminder that it is better to joke about death than to fear it. Those leering skulls and skeletons with their clattering bones are simply expressions of the Latin American sense of humor, coupled with an honest appraisal of human mortality and a genuine celebration of gratitude and thanksgiving for life’s bounty.
