Sydney and Blue are back! The Devil’s Breath is fast paced, full of action, suspense, adventure and danger. The Sydney Rye series reminds me a lot of Sherlock Holmes, with an adult twist to it. Definitely not a book for those younger than 18. There’s sex, violence, and a fair share of bad language. If any of those things turn you off, chances are you won’t enjoy the story that lies beneath those things. If you haven’t read books one through four, you can still read this one and not be at a total loss. It can stand alone, but you would greatly benefit from reading the others to familiarize yourself with all the characters (many from past books are back). One of my favorite things about this series is what a strong character Sydney is. She kicks ass first, takes names later. She’s always fighting for the underdog. The witty banter between Sydney and the team she has assembled to help her in this situation had me laughing out loud several times… even between her and Blue (Blue is her dog… yep, witty banter with the dog). But it’s not all laughs, there is a much darker side to the story too. Sydney is stronger than ever in this book, but she still doesn’t know who she can trust. If you don’t like reading books out-of-order, Unleashed is currently free on Amazon! I would recommend this book to anyone who loves mystery, suspense, strong heroines, humor, and doesn’t mind sex, violence or bad language.

Mildly interesting. The plot is good, but the story just stops dead in what appears to be the middle of everything. It then picks up with a superficial explanation of why the action stopped dead and moves on to the storyline for the next book. The 'bad' language used by the main character comes across as contrived and unnecessary. And... the author needs to do some more research on her Dade and Monroe County geography as much of the info is simply incorrect. All things considered, the book was okay, but I wouldn't buy any more in the series.

Although this is the 5th in a series by this author, it's not necessary to read the other books - and I am pretty sure I wouldn't want to, anyway. The backstory is given at the beginning. At any rate, this story begins so slowly, and the characters are so unlikeable and 1-dimensional, that I just couldn't get through it. The main character apparently kills a lot of people and has sex a lot, often with co-workers. The first situation she finds herself in is so improbable that I just stopped reading it after that (the scene in the dress shop). The other characters aren't much better - boundary-violating tough guys who, for some reason, the main character lets push her around. As for the dog, the author may have just as well had him talk, since he is a cross between a cozy mystery animal and a regular dog...that at least might have made the book interesting. In short, I didn't like any of the characters and the plot was so mundane and slow-moving that I put it down not too long after beginning to read it. And it will be deleted off my Nook as soon as I finish this review.

What a lovely find here amongst the free books. I would definitely purchase more from this author. A relatively fafaast paced, action packed book. You do not need to have read the others to be able to enjoy this one. I started with number 5 and look forward to reading number 6

Sydney Rye has come full circle. She’s back in Miami and this time it’s to look into what happened to her brother’s ex-partner, Hugh. Hugh’s been accused of murdering one of the people involved in his well-known restaurant, but he has no memory of the incident and Sydney knows Hugh couldn’t do it. Mulberry brought Sydney back to assist Hugh at the behest of Robert Maxim, a man she hates for trying to kill her. Now she’s more suspicious than ever when Maxim tries to recruit her for his company. Searching into hidden motives and areas of dark and disturbing research, Sydney may just be over her head. She’s also being torn in a different direction as friends from her past show up to invite her to join them. THE DEVIL’S BREATH is by far my favorite book in the Sydney Rye series. I like who Sydney has become, even if she doesn’t always feel the same about herself. Significantly loyal to those she calls friends; Sydney must try to fix this situation with the accusation of murder against Hugh. Sydney is pushed to the breaking point between Maxim and friends from her past, the search for the truth and the dark paths it leads her down. Sydney doesn’t like feeling boxed into a corner, but she’s got some hard decisions to make. I absolutely love the interactions between Blue and Sydney, because I think they’re a lot alike. Blue is a very special dog – he’s just right for Sydney and what she fights for. THE DEVIL’S BREATH is a master mystery, filled with action, intrigue, and dangerous people. Please read this series!

Sydney, Blue and Company have returned once again to see if they can keep us guessing while on the edge of our seats in this, the fifth book in the Sydney Rye series by Emily Kimelman. If you are not familiar with these books but are a lover of suspense and mystery, you have met your match! In this edition, there is more adventure, more action, more mystery, more, More, MORE! The characters have more depth to them and we gain more insight and the group draws tighter and more cohesive as a team. Ms. Kimelman hones her writing skills with each book. I feel the emotions of the characters more in this book and while I wanted to find the answer, I did not want the story to end. This is not a book appropriate for readers under 18 but if you love mystery and suspense do not miss this series! I cannot wait for Number Six! Rating: 5 Star***** I received this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. All opinions are my own and no other compensation was received.

Sydney, Blue and the gang are back.  Sydney is stronger than ever but still unsure about who to trust.  Mulberry is working for Bobby Maxim and she KNOWS she doesn’t trust him.  But when Bobby invites her to help in the investigation to prove that Hugh (her dead brother James’ boyfriend) was framed for murder she has to do it.   THE DEVIL'S BREATH is the latest in this dark often quirky mystery series and is just as good as the previous installments.  The author keeps you guessing from one moment to the next.  This is a fast paced can’t put down till you finish book.

I love this series. The reviews indicate readers either really love Sydney's stories or really don't. This one was a little slow, which is the only reason I didn't rate it a 5. Awesomely entertaining.

I have enjoyed several books in this series but this one was just missing something. The action stops dead at the most intense point of the story and is a let down. The main character seems to be getting even more foul-mouthed and dishonoring to God and it's just too much. If she doesn't believe in God, why does she talk about Him so much? This will be my last read in this series.

When the foul mouthed main character blasphemed God I was apalled. Horrible book! Quit right there after trying to read this.

This one goes to far. Even in these days of liberated women, it seems unlikely Sydney Rye would be strong enough to do the things she does.
