Overview

The Devil's Metal by Karina Halle

It's the summer of 1974 and 21-year old Dawn Emerson has only three things she wants to do: compete one last time in the Ellensburg Rodeo, win back her ex-boyfriend Ryan, and become the best damn music journalist at Central Washington State College. But all her plans are left in the dust when she's contacted by CREEM MAGAZINE to go on the road with one of her favorite groups, the up-and-coming metal band, Hybrid.

At first the assignment reads like a dream come true. Not only will Dawn land some much-needed credibility as a female music journalist, but she'll finally get to experience life from the other side of the stage, and maybe crack the drunken, enigmatic code that is guitarist Sage Knightly. Instead, Dawn finds herself on an aging tour bus filled with ego-maniacs, band politics and a whole lot of sex, drugs and rock n' roll. When monsters start showing up in dressing rooms and some of Sage's groupies become increasingly strange and dangerous, Dawn discovers the band is not only going places—they're going straight to Hell. And Dawn has a backstage pass.

About the Author

The daughter of a Norwegian Viking and a Finnish Moomin, Karina Halle grew up in Vancouver, Canada with trolls and eternal darkness on the brain. This soon turned into a love of all things that go bump in the night and a rather sadistic appreciation for freaking people out. Like many of the flawed characters she writes, Karina never knew where to find herself and has dabbled in acting, make-up artistry, film production, screenwriting, photography, travel writing and music journalism. She eventually found herself in the pages of the very novels she wrote (if only she had looked there to begin with).

Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently lives on an island off the coast of British Columbia where she's preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

Couldn't put it down. I love Karina's writing style. She always creates such interesting characters. I'm totally addicted and cant wait for the sequel. **** Still waiting for EIT Into the hollow to be available on here...wish BN would get with the program

Discovered this author on a fluke when I picked up a free book from the EIT series -I've been hooked ever since! Karina's got an engaging writing style and has a great ability to flesh out characters that make them real and relatable. The rock 'n' roll "atmosphere" of the story is also a bonus. :) Love the paranormal twists, and totally LOVE that I found an author that can write stories that aren't simply more of the sappy teenage crap that's so prevalent nowadays....I mean really, who needs another co-dependent teenager fantasy love story with a vampire or werewolf thrown in to pretend it's actually got a plot line?? I have all of Karina Halle's books, and I have yet to be disappointed in any of them!

Worth the time it takes to read. Characters are easy to relate too. Just as Karina's characters in the EIT books.

The book is over 600 pages, which is good for a free book, however, it depends if you want to read a book about a person making a deal with the devil's demon for fame and fortune. The author brought the charaters involved to a clamantic end in vivid detail , but for me it was too long to get to the interesting parts. I skipped paragraphs to get to the end. The book is not bad nor is it great, but like I said it depends on your personal preferance. It has mystery, interesting characters, romance, and drama.

I had a hard time reading this book. It starts out slow. I was over halfway through before I started getting into it. I loved her other books but this one wasn't grabbing me and pulling me in.

Surprisingly good! I loved it! I didn't expect much from a free  book, but I was trying to curb my spending. I read it in one indulgent sitting. At first I thought it was too derivative of Almost Famous, but that just set the stage for a very unique story.  This was my first Karina Halle book, but it will not be my last. A great read and free to boot!
