While some may consider it inappropriate for an author to critique his or her own work, I feel compelled to provide more information for you the reader. I originally wrote this book in 1988 or 89 while in federal prison serving time for smuggling marijuana into the United Sates from Mexico. I wanted to write a factual account of my story, but was unable to do the research necessary under the circumstances, so I opted instead to write a novel that paralleled my personal experiances. Many of the places described are real; some are not. Some of the characters are patterned after real people, but the events described did not happen. They could have. I spent a year as a fugitive in the despoblado of Northern Mexico after escaping from federal prison. While there I participated in a major smuggling operation and witnessed corruption that went to the highest levels of the government. I also grew marijuana down there and when this came to the attention of the authorites both there and here, the Mexican government sent in soldiers--I am convinced to make sure I did not live to tell my story. I spent two and a half months fleeing on foot through the Mountains of Northern Mexico, and saw things no other white man on the plantet is alive to recount. This is not the work of a literary master. The story is very good; the telling of it leaves something to be desired. It was the best I could do, armed with the limited writing skills I have. No one else could have told this story.

It is set in the beautiful, but poverty stricken region of Southwest Texas known as The Big Bend and the corresponding Chihuahuan desert of Northern Mexico, the story depicts the lives of three local marijuanos, whose endless obsession to get high catapults them into the dangerous world of drug smuggling. Their journey brings instant success: drugs, money, prostitutes, and notoriety - among their peers, and cops - both bad and good. They soon discover the world of drug smuggling may prove much easier to get into than out of - alive anyway. Follow these young men through a world few know intimately, a land of smugglers, outlaws, and desperados, where every living creature seems poised to bite, strike, stick or sting. Witness their fight for survival as they battle forces that threaten not only their lives, but their souls as well.
