It seemed like an every day domestic scene, played out in thousands of kitchens across the world. But it was different. Brooke felt strangely excited and even a little frightened. Nick, in the kitchen with her, was not her husband.
Brooke Newhouse had been married only a short time, but sometimes she felt that the big man standing beside her, Nick Lyon, was part of the family. He was her husband's best friend, and spent endless hours with the young newlyweds.
Sometimes, Brooke thought her husband, Matt, was incredibly naive. Like tonight. He was away on business, but before he left, he encouraged Brooke to invite Nick to dinner.
"He'll keep you company, hon," Matt had said. "He likes spending time here. Hell, the guy's crazy about you!"
Crazy about you. Those words haunted Brooke. Matt didn't understand Nick. Nick was a man first and a friend second. She sensed that at their first meeting, but Matt was so trusting and sweet. He didn't see that side of Nick.
Now, as she rinsed a plate, she glanced at Nick. There was something about him that set her pulse racing. Matt was better looking and had a better personality. But there was something about Nick, some animal quality, that made her blood race.
She often wondered why he spent so much time at their house. He was a bachelor who ought to be out having a good time. When she asked Matt about it, he said that Nick was like an old shoe. Some old shoe, Brooke thought now. More like a keg of dynamite waiting to go off.
More than one fantasy about Nick had filled her thoughts. More often than she cared to acknowledge, Brooke thought about Nick and imagined what he looked like naked.
