Overview

When Jack Edney is assaulted and hospitalized in Priouxville on the banks of Ghost Bayou near Bayou Teche in Louisiana, Tony Boudreaux forgoes his long anticipated vacation to aid his best friend. He is surprised to learn that Jack's assailants were searching for hidden diamonds, but the jewels turn out to be the least of his worries.

In his efforts to uncover who attacked Jack, Tony stumbles onto three murders the locals attributed to the mythical loup garou, a shape-changing creature roaming the swamps. The deeper he delves into the mystery of the diamonds, the more he becomes a target himself.

His hunt for the stolen gems and those responsible for Jack's assault take him into the chilling eighteenth-century culture of backwater swamps, the unholy mysteries of New Orleans, and the furtive backroom schemes of local politics. As if he didn't have his hands full already, he is forced to take his ex-wife, Diane, who is married to Jack, under his wing for her own safety.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Conwell’s slight 12th Tony Boudreaux mystery (after 2009’s An Unmarked Grave) takes the Austin, Tex., PI to Priouxville, La., where his ex-wife, Diane, and her husband, Jack Edney, an old friend of Tony’s, have recently bought a vacation home with a storied past on Bayou Fantôme. Unfortunately, one night when Jack goes to investigate what he thinks are animal noises on the porch, he gets beat up by two men asking about diamonds. A voluble old-timer fills in Tony on an million diamond heist 13 years earlier as well as a recent murder attributed to the mythical “loup-garou,” or werewolf. Colorful locals—a shrimper, a casino owner, a huge Cajun called T-Ball—lend assistance. In seeking the truth, Tony must handle snakes, both reptile and human. Conwell drops so many clues to the location of the missing gems the Hardy boys could find them. (Feb.)

Meet the Author

Kent Conwell grew up in the Texas Panhandle in the town of Wheeler, population 848. The solitude of the Panhandle, which offered little more than school and work, encouraged his reading and writing as well as his exploration of the vastness of the rolling prairies, the emptiness of which carried the presentiment of mystery and death. A successful educator, his love for writing about the West and its enigmas, a period in history unique to America, has never waned.

The Diamonds of Ghost Bayou is Kent's fourteenth mystery for AVALON. He has also written thirty-three Westerns for AVALON. Shootout on the Sabine, Llano River Valley, and Grave for a Dead Gunfighter are his most recent Western titles.
