Overview

The Dormant Gene by Barry William Doughty

May Roach has a secret, the dark facts of it are known only to her and she prays that her secret will outlive her. When May’s youngest daughter, Ruby, gives birth to twins; her elder sister, Pearl, is devastated. Pearl believes, with reason, that her own fiancé is the father. This, in her mind, not only justifies absconding with the babies, but also satisfies a burning need for revenge. Pearl has no knowledge, however, that there is an inherent defect in her family’s genes; a blemish that can be activated by just such a desperate measure and that the consequences can be devastating.

This novel was 602 pages long, all but 2 pages were devoted to the storyline. This could be called a now you see them, now you don't story, because of an early childhood game played by sisters. The game had a hugh impact on the girls' futures, as well as on those around them. This book was nicely edited. How I enjoy writing this about a free book. I hated the cover of this book, it was way too noir for my taste and it affected my perception of the storyline. The book was well written. There is a lot death, deception, a dysfunctional family, and an unusual ending, I did not really care for. If the ending had been different, I would have gave it another star. The characters were not very likable, but they were not supossed to be. There were some loose ends, but not to the point of being frustrating due to the lack of fini. Over all an interesting read for a noir, mystery suspense. For adult readers as it contains sexual and other adult situations as well as cursing. I enjoyed this book. AD
