A British chick lit romantic comedy novel for fans of Bridget Jones, Sophie Kinsella and best friend romance.
This book is the first in the Parker Sisters British chick lit series, but can be read as a standalone (no cliffhanger).
25-year-old Mel Parker has a few tiny problems:
* Her job is terrible
* She's been dumped yet again (and her ex is now her boss)
* Her parents think she's a loser compared to her perfect younger sister
* All her efforts to improve her life seem doomed to failure
* There just isn't enough chocolate in the world to make up for the above.
The best thing in her life has always been her best friend Will, who has seen her through every crisis from lost toys to pregnancy scares. But his girlfriend (who's prettier, better-dressed, more successful and secretly evil) is determined to replace Mel as the woman in his life and how is Mel supposed to compete?
And what do you do when you've pretty much given up on your own life? You help others, of course! Whether they like it or not.
After all, what's the worst that could happen?
A laugh out loud British chick lit romantic comedy novel based (loosely) on Jane Austen's Emma.

The Dr Pepper Prophecies by Jennifer Gilby Roberts In this contemporary Chick-Lit, Mel Parker, who we learn early on is a basket case, works in a dead-end job for an insurance claim office. Nothing seems to be going her way, so when she can’t fix her own life she decides perhaps she can help others find happiness. With a running theme of “What’s the worst that could happen?” Mel finds out the hard way. Bless her heart, she had the best intentions, but after a while I wanted to slap some sense into her. Especially where Will was concerned, her lifelong childhood friend she refuses to see as a boyfriend for fear it will ruin their friendship. As we learn a little more about her dysfunctional family I was able to gain a little more understanding for her relentless behavior and need for acceptance. Throughout the hysterical situations Mel gets herself into she continues to believe that just because today is crap doesn’t mean tomorrow will be. The characters, while perhaps a little out there, are not totally unrealistic and their dialogue is fun and engaging. This is a light-hearted read with some serious relationship themes. I think this would be the perfect summer beach read. The Dr Pepper Prophesies' is a witty, realistic and quick read that leave you wishing you could continue on with Mel & Will's adventures. Mel is quite hilarious and likeable as a character, you find yourself rooting for her to be successful in her endeavors, but secretly wanting her to fail so you can live through the fallout that surely is to follow. Will is adorable, solid and just an all around good guy. He is a great match to Mel and often times is the equally hilarious voice of reason. The supporting group of friends and troll boss add to the well thought out plot. Jennifer Gilby Roberts has a fantastic literary voice. This is the first book I've read of hers, but hopefully not that last. I'd love to read more on Mel's adventures.
Wonderful British Choc- Lit! Funny and observant this book will show you what happens when a woman stuck in limbo finds her way. I loved The Dr Pepper Prophecies, with diverse characters the book was a real hoot. From a blue cervix to blind dates the shocking revelations that unfold are down right hilarious. Leading lady Mel is a bit of a walking disaster, but behind all her problems is really a woman confused by the life she is leading. What I loved about Mel was her thought process and Jennifer Gilby Roberts brings us one wacky chick. Once you start reading you won't want to stop, you are immediately drawn to Mel and straight away you want to solve all her problems, if it was a film you would be screaming at the tv "Nooooo, Can't you see he is your Harry to your Sally!" This is a seriously funny book you will giggle all the way through it, Mel sets up blind dates with totally inappropriate men, she freaks out on a plane which is still one of my favourite moments of the book! Reviewed by Cheryl Schopen for Readers' Favorite Jennifer Gilby Roberts' The Dr. Pepper Prophecies is about Melanie Parker, who is going through a rough patch in life. After getting her boyfriend a job as her boss, he dumps her and now seems to be making her life a living hell at work, not that she even enjoyed the job in the first place. Her family never stops reminding her of what a loser and a failure she is. Her one positive constant in her life is her best friend, Will, but she's convinced that won't last long because his girlfriend hates Mel and wants her out of Will's life. In an effort to try and at least improve the lives of her friends, she makes it her personal project to make sure they follow her advice. While she tells herself she is thinking of their best interests, things begin to backfire. Yet, she sticks to her motto: what's the worst that can happen? After reading The Dr. Pepper Prophecies, I can honestly say that Jennifer Gilby Roberts is now at the top of my list of favorite chick lit authors along with Sophie Kinsella. Her writing style had me practically on the floor in uncontrollable fits of laughter. Mel and her crazy antics were just hilarious. Her relationship with Will was adorable. And the plot and the dialogue were incredibly entertaining, amusing, and even heartwarming. I am so grateful for discovering this author; I will definitely be reading the rest of Roberts' books. I highly recommend this book for any chick lit fans. Trust me. You'll thank me.
