Overview

The Drifter

If misery loves company, then it has found its ideal mate in young Waylon Payne, the son of country singer Sammi Smith (who put her indelible stamp on "Help Me Make It Through the Night") and Willie Nelson's longtime guitarist, Jody Payne. The music of this Waylon suggests a lot of sources: Lucinda Williams, in both its rock-infused sound and its lyrical focus on the dark underside of relationships; early Wilco, in Payne's vocals, which can sound like a dead ringer for Jeff Tweedy's; early-'70s Stones, in the mesh of ominous percussion and angry, stinging guitars; and Dwight Yoakam, in the hard, twangy edge of Payne's forays into Bakersfield-style country. Backing up the cover shot of Payne smoking a cigarette in what looks like a motel room, his songs describe the world of an outcast, both from the love of women and, at times, of God. Women are invariably leaving or have left, and in dirgelike laments such as "Her" and "On and On," he seems both resigned to his loss and enraged that it's happening to him. In the dense, atmospheric "Christian," he beseeches a friend to explain why God has abandoned him. "Pretend," however, takes a sad situation -- he asks a girl to pretend she cares about him, just for fantasy's sake -- and gives it a buoyant lift on wings of twangy guitar, a bouncy rhythm, and a soaring, singsong melody. He even lightens up a bit to put a little funk in his misery in the boisterous "Ain't Got No Match." The Drifter is a meaty debut, introducing Waylon Payne as a wanderer worth tracking.
