About the Author

Dana Regan is a writer and illustrator of more than seventy-five children’s books, including Smart About the Presidents, Smart About the First Ladies, and Monkey See, Monkey Do. Prior to publishing these works, she designed greeting cards for Hallmark. Regan lives in Kansas City, where she receives many deliveries every week.

Berta Maluenda is a Spanish illustrator living in her hometown, Zaragoza, Spain. She has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, a master’s degree in drawing and video creation from the University of Granada, and a postgraduate degree in children’s illustration that she studied for in Barcelona. In her illustrations she examines the humor and the charm of the everyday, also the poetic and the unexpected, each in its right measure. She thinks with a pencil in her hand, and works it out with digital techniques, although she loves to go back to the brush, watercolors, ink, and color pencils. She loves live music, listening to the radio, traveling, reading, and going to the market. She is inspired by the people around her, and she also loves cinema, tea, and animals.

K-Gr 2—Mike the hedgehog delivers items in Happy Rivers, a town populated by a menagerie of cheerful animals. Mike meets his garbage truck driver friend, Ash, and her helper, Sam, picking up trash. When a rubber duck unknowingly lodges in the trash door opening, garbage begins to spill out everywhere! Mike tries to alert Ash and Sam. "Mike waves and shouts. They do not hear. He has to chase them to get near." As Mike follows the truck, he must avoid flying debris. When he finally gets their attention, Mike has a generous solution for cleaning up the trail of trash. Colorful, cartoon-style illustrations in this beginning reader depict a happy community with a lake, a park, tidy homes, and animal residents who are willing to pitch in to keep it that way. The trash truck chase provides an amusing conflict, and the resolution of Mike changing his company name to Mike Delivers And Picks Up! is a fitting conclusion.
