This double-disc, 49-track set combines
Ronnie Hawkins' four LPs for
Roulette Records, originally recorded and released between 1958 and 1962, including 1958's
Ronnie Hawkins, 1960's polar opposites
Mr. Dynamo and
The Folk Ballads of Ronnie Hawkins, and another thematic experiment, 1962's
Ronnie Hawkins Sings the Songs of Hank Williams. It adds up to a lot of
Hawkins, and it's all over the map stylistically, but when he nails a song, which he does frequently, he sounds like the unsung legend he was. This is only for serious fans and collectors, though. A more condensed, single-disc version of this set would be ideal as an introduction to this passionate and endearing singer. ~ Steve Leggett
