Family is something that we can't choose to be placed in. If we did, would we choose the families that we are in? Do you know the rich history--stellar or sordid-- that it might be? Have you taken the opportunity to ask your family members what they know so that you might know it and pass it along to your children and their children and so on and so forth? Well, Maxine Thompson, has taken the opportunity to introduce us to a fictionalized account of her family's past. And her work might inspire you to ask people still living to share their accounts of family history with you.

In this story, Thompson, looks at the lives in the maternal line of this family. You are treated to a brief history of the family that existed in slavery and right after the release from slavery. She does a great job of showing how this tied into the way that the family acts today. Her family dynamics and how that effects the women in the family is amazing and touches a place inside you if you have sisters or girl children. You will see things in your own family differently or you might see similarities that have you calling members in your family telling them to read this book so you can discuss!

If you haven't already gotten the thinly disguised hints--this book is the greatest! You will want to read it over and over and your sister friends will want to do the same. It will spark lots and lots of discussion for those who are in reading groups. An added bonus, go to her website, and order the book and get an autographed copy.

I rate this book 5 quills.
