A couple of friends recommended J.M. Madden's Lost and Found Series to me and let me tell you, I am so looking forward to this series. The Embattled Road is the prequel to the series and centers around Marines Duncan, John and Chad, and how they were injured in battle and their immediate recovery. It also sets up the rest of the series by showing how the three of them come back together at the end.
These three heroes each have physical and emotional challenges any Marine would have given the situation they lived through. It was very interesting watching them go through their hospital stay post injury and the road they each took from there. We don't normally get to see the gritty stuff like this in typical romance books so the truth and rawness of these stories pulls you in and really has you falling for these guys and cheering for them.
The character development was well done and I really enjoyed getting each of their points of view. The thoughts and emotions of each of the men seem typical of what you would expect from their situation.Throughout the story, I felt heartache for Duncan, John and Chad, but also was able to laugh and cheer them on at times. The fact that there was so much emotion in one novella, I so can't wait to dive into the full length stories next. If you like military romance (even though there is no romance in this novella), I recommend you give The Embattled Road a try!

I loved this book. While it wasn't a book I would normally pick up, I'm so glad I read it. It was fast-paced and I finished it in one afternoon. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is that it didn't really have any romance. I know that the romance comes later in the series, but I would have liked to have seen some romance in this book. Regardless, I enjoyed this story immensely and would love to read the other books in the series. J.M. Madden has created characters that I have quickly fallen in love with and can't wait to read more about them. This book does an amazing job at developing the characters and their background. I highly recommend this book.

The prequel by J.M. Madden is; technically a Romance, as it sets the scene up for the Wounded Warriors coming down the road. But I think, more importantly; it gives civilians, like myself, a very tiny glimpes into the lives of the Soldiers who volunteer to protect our lives, families, and freedom. It allows you to see both the visible and invisible scars they carry for us and how we ignore those scars and them. Enough soapbox despite it being true.
Ms. Madden's writing is clear and easy to read. Plot moves along well and the characters are believable. I have already completed the next book in the series and enjoyed it immencely. In fact, I've had problems putting them down. Starting on the third as I finish this Review and Post.
One other thing. Ms. Madden has arrange for a Lend Me feature for this book. But please be aware that some proceeds for the purchase of the book go to the Wounded Warriors Fund to further serve our returning troops.

John, Duncan, and Chad, wow. What a great prequel for this series. Madden did a great job of getting inside these Marine's heads, details in how they think and talk were spot on. She was especially good bringing out what wounded/disabled Vets experience. Ready to dive right into Embattled Hearts.

I enjoyed this book and liked the characters which were well-developed although the language was a little too crude for me. As a physical therapist, I can empathize with the heartbreak and struggle that occurs with overcoming debilitating injuries as well as the joy and new life that can come through the process.

In the military, your squad becomes your family. Returning to civilian life requires a family to readjust. Sometimes your military buddies are part of that therapy.

Excellent start to this series! Gives us great background information on all three main characters, Duncan, John and Chad and how they got together to start their amazing agency Lost and Found. It was sad to see how three courageous men were brought down by their war injuries, but by staying positive and maintaining their friendships and Marine brotherhood they moved forward and put their amazing skills to use in helping the public.
