It wasn't bad, per say, but it wasn't good, either. It definitely wasn't what I normally expect from Cinda Williams Chima. The story line was sort of vague and it definitely could have been fleshed out more. I didn't like the characters this time -- they both came off as stereotypical. Jonah is a handsome bad-boy assassin with a tragic backstory and a good heart, and Emma is a spunky "normal" girl who actually is the key to everything. Does any of this sound familiar to you? Also, the book ended without finishing things, unlike the rest of the books in the series, and I feel like much of it could've been cut to make this and the sequel into one book. I kept on losing interest when reading this, which is unusual for me. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone looking for a well-written, cogent novel with sound character development (of which there was none). Overall, I was pretty disappointed with this novel. However, I gave it 3 stars instead of 2 because Chima is (normally) a very good writer. Hopefully her next novel will be much better.

Cinda Williams Chima writes excellent fantasy stories for younger readers. I didn't think this one was up to her usual standard. It didn't seem very focused About ten years before the Dragon Heir the massacre of Thorn Hill took place. An entire commune of sorcerers was massacred. the survivors and their weirstones have mutated, which means they possess powers that are hard to control. Jonah is one of those survivors. Since the massacre his touch kills, so his career development as an assassin would seem an obvious one. In fact that is all he seems to do throughout the book. Kill people and play his guitar. He connects with Emma on a musical level and because they share a similar history. The musical aspect seems to be linked to something other than just a talent for music. Overall it doesn't match the previous books in the series and I found this book very disjointed and wishy-washy. The Thorn Hill plot could have been expanded upon a lot more. The mystery of who set the massacre in motion and why or looking into the new mutations instead of following around one character predominantly. It is possible that this is what I would call an interim book, which is giving the reader enough info to lead onto the next one, which would explain the info dump and vague plot.  I received a copy of this book via NetGalley.

Absolutely amazing, but for it to make sense you really need to read the first 3 books to get the back ground of the story. Best book I have read in a while!!!!!!

It may sound silly but the ending was my favorite part, i loved all of the book, but the last few pages were sooo good. I am veeery excited for book two. The ending was like that of an awesome tv show finale, just leaving you wanting more!

I love reading always have and always will. Ive never not finished a book no matter how bad. In preperation for this novel i read all of her other books and the earlier heir series before hand and loved everysingle one of them! Apon starting this book however i was immediately confused it seems almost as if written by another author trying to start a new series in the same universe. Im currently 193 pages in and honestly i dont want to continue. Nothing has been explained and i still dont even know the plot. What is a savant? If you are thinking about purchasing this book i suggest reading it as a completely seperatte novel maybe then you wont be as disappointed.
