Editorial Reviews

George Cohen
This is Fell's thirty-sixth garden book; 375 annuals, perennials, bulbs, shrubs, and small trees are listed, each with a color photograph. Each entry contains information on the plant's common name, flowers and leaves, habit, culture, season of bloom, hardiness, and uses. The plants are listed by their botanical names, but their descriptions are not given in botanical terminology; a pubescent leaf, for example, is described as downy, velvety, or hairy, depending on its texture. The criteria for a plant's inclusion were its ready availability and its flowering effect. Hardy, easy-to-care-for varieties were given precedence over tender or challenging ones. With photography also by Fell, this big, beautiful book is an alternate selection of the Better Homes and Gardens and the Garden Book clubs.
