Kaia's never been less sure of herself as she leaves to train for her Energy Crusade. Selected for an elite team with a high energy payout, Kaia should be proud and hopeful-- especially because the captain of her team is Ajax, her dearest childhood friend. But Ajax wants nothing to do with her, and her training exercises raise questions that Kaia's not sure she wants to answer.
Ajax shouldn't blame Kaia for the fact that he's stuck at University when his peers are already off on their Crusade, but he can't help it. Between the bitterness of being left behind and the responsibility to lead this new team of Crusaders, Ajax feels frustrated and overburdened. It doesn't help to see Kaia's hurt face when he denies the unique bond they share.
When the training takes an unexpected turn Kaia and Ajax realize that they need each other more than they ever expected-- to decipher the conflicting messages of the Reformation and the Resistance, to determine where their loyalties lie, and ultimately to stay alive amidst an epic struggle that will challenge every truth they've ever known.

Good luck finding a better bargain for $4.99 out there in the YA world. This is an expertly constructed vision of a dystopian future, young adult yearning and romance, with nifty sic-fi and thriller elements to boot. Hunger Games fans will enjoy this work tremendously. The next installment cannot come soon enough.
If you are a fan of the Hunger Games you will love The Energy Crusades. You instantly get caught up in the story and the characters. I couldn't put it down.
The Energy Crusades is a YA fan's dream. It is a dystopian/futuristic, fast paced story that is filled with details of not just one world ruled by destruction and secrets, but two, creating an ever expanding plot as it moves along without sacrificing character development or leaving behind any loose ends. While I could go into detail about the plot line(s) I will refrain from doing so for fear of spoilers, but let it suffice to say that there is a lot going on in this story that will come together in the end to make you scream in frustration because you can't yet get your hands on the second one immediately afterwards. ;) TEC pulls you in right away with the prologue and delivers, chapter after chapter. Although it is primarily written from the POV of the young (and very likable and relatable) female protagonist, the author also gives us a few POV's of her other characters which gives us even more to sink our teeth into, further complimenting the book's plot twists and turns. The dialogue is smart and often times funny. The characters are rich with a wonderful balance of transparency and secrets. The world in which these young adults are trying to navigate is tough and dangerous, yet there is a beauty that one can easily visualize as the author shows you her world with her words. The energy suits, orbs, virtual tennis partners, cave dwellers, Descenders and the like are all fantastical things that will stir up your imagination and excite you, but it is the relationships that you will form with the characters that really carries this story, I think. Their insecurities are something we can all tap into and relate to, and you will find yourself understanding them all- even if you are not 'in their corner'. That is a tough thing for an author to pull off in a story. Valerie Noble does it. I am hard pressed to say what I loved most about this book- the personalities of the characters, the rich and inventive world the author builds, the anticipation of the budding romance of the main characters, the action in the Crusader training exercises, the tense but exciting exchanges the Elite Crusaders have with the Resistance, the style of the writing, or my desire to just KNOW what the heck would happen next. I love YA, but it is seldom that I feel this satisfied on every front while reading a story. In just 281 pages I was taken into a world that I got lost in ...and now anxiously await the return of. The Energy Crusades is a MUST read. Do yourself a favor and start reading... (Note: This book is appropriate for all ages.)
