Most Helpful Customer Reviews
The author vividly portrays romance in a hostile and totalitarian environment in the eastern bloc. The story begins with the main character, a writer from the free world set out to interview a dictator. Having pre conceived notions of the dictator as a result of the media’s depiction of him; she initially finds every aspect of the general troubling and becomes more and more assertive that the image she had constructed prior to her visit was indeed the right one. But in a well constructed twist to the story, after certain circumstances and spending time with the General, she begins to unravel the General’s true personality. The story flows smoothly from chapter to chapter – I was glued to it till the very end. Excerpts from the author’s portrayal of the General’s mannerism make one feel as if you are watching a movie “The General sandwiched her hand between both of his. He had large, strong hands with a gold pinkie ring on his left hand. All she could think was that she wanted her hand back. His grip was gentle, but somewhat unsettling.” Some passages provide intricate details regarding the General’s grandeur lifestyle which gives the romantic story a royal touch. There are a few glitches like for instance too much detail is given about inanimate objects such as the talking robot which side tracks the story for a little while. At other times, the author seems to have a few characters in the story of little significance like the book keeper in the library whose entries and exits in the story sometimes disrupt the flow. Overall the reader will truly enjoy the plot and make one ponder that impressions made at first are not necessarily the right ones!
