The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict (Mysterious Benedict Society Series) by Trenton Lee Stewart, Diana Sudyka

Before there was a Mysterious Benedict Society, there was simply a boy named Nicholas Benedict. Meet the boy who started it all....

Nine-year-old Nicholas Benedict has more problems than most children his age. Not only is he an orphan with an unfortunate nose, but he also has narcolepsy, a condition that gives him terrible nightmares and makes him fall asleep at the worst possible moments. Now he's being sent to a new orphanage, where he will encounter vicious bullies, selfish adults, strange circumstances — and a mystery that could change his life forever. Luckily, he has one important thing in his favor: He's a genius.

On his quest to solve the mystery, Nicholas finds enemies around every corner, but also friends in unexpected places — and discovers along the way that the greatest puzzle of all is himself.

This book is fantastic for all ages. Trenton Lee Stewart does not dissapoint with his prequel to his phenominal Mysterious Benedict Society. Stewart's writing style is captivating and whimsical and fits his story perfectly. Besides being an exceptionally good writer, his characters and plot sparkled. Each character was unique and consistent and characterized beautifully. The plot was enthralling (however my ONLY negative comment about this book is that there were about 3 chapters in the middle where the pacing was a little bit slow, though the slowness was a bit necessary for the plot). The ending was a solid and satisfying one, all of Stewart's plot threads tied up beautifully into a wonderful little package that created a masterpiece of a book. While it is not essential to read The Mysterious Benedict Society before reading this book, I found it helpful considering I knew the main character better. I read The Mysterious Benedict Society when I was younger, and now that I am older I still found that I enjoyed this story as much as if I were still in grade school. This is a truly fantastic read for those who have whimsical minds and enjoy a good mystery. My only complaint is that I wish he would write more in this series! While the ending was satisfying I was sad to see the book end. If I could give it 6 stars I would ;)

I'm pretty young, but I find this book to be highly informatice and I couldn't take my eyes off it. This book will make you understand the world and yourself a little better. Are you smarter than Nicholas? I highly doubt it. Great read dude!

I love this book! You learn to care deeply for young nicholas and his friends as they meet in secret, trying to find a treasure and get through an extremely hard childhood. You will love this story of three children trying desperately to find ways to make their lives better.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Nicholas Benedict and experiencing a bit of his childhood. I again found myself attempting to piece together the clues to solve the mystery and enjoy the messages of humanity in each book.

I love this book!! It gives a detailed insight of how Mr. Benedict grew up. This better book shows the marvelous intellectual intelligence of nine year old Nicholas. You will laugh, cry, and sense the gutt wrenching emotions of this book.(in a non vomitting,bitter-sweet "AHA I GET IT NOW!!!!" way) Btw the person who wrote this is only 12!!! Not joking!

This series of books by Mr. Stewart has been very humerous. As i was reading them i was constantly figuring out the puzzles and making guesses at what was going to happen next. I love the word-play, it was always making me think, and frequently laugh out loud. The idea behind this story is one of the best I have read. I would recommend this story to anyone with an active mind, so you may also make assumptions. Believe me, it adds to the excitement of major events when you are right about it. I hope he decides to right more books much like these.

How can a prequel without the four main characters or a true villain work? Extraordinarily. "The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict" is the most engaging entry in this series and the one I became most immersed in. Why are bullies more uncomfortable to read about than a man trying to take over the world with the "Whisperer"? Probably because one is something we've actually dealt with in our lives, and the way Trenton Lee Stewart deals with them isn't to make this a tale of revenge but rather a tale of outclassing and outwitting these bullies. This goes for the young and old bullies Nicholas deals with in this book, and though it's occassionaly cheesy, it never really gets too watered down. Truly a delight to read, this one focuses less on the fantastic exploits of an evil genius like Ledroptha Curtain instead choosing to focus on most realistic dangers and the boy who beats them all. 4.5/5
