The Farther He Runs: A Kick Novel by Lynda Aicher

In an explosive novel of long-awaited release from the award-winning author of The Deeper He Hurts, two emotionally exposed Marines learn to lean on each other—and discover the courage to act on their innermost needs.
After years away from home, Tanner Dorsey is back and sorting through feelings that have him in a stranglehold. The hardened Marine will do anything for a fallen comrade, so when an accident leaves Finn Kelley fighting for his life, Tanner’s eager to be there for him. In fact, Tanner’s ready and willing to do anything Finn asks—especially if it means finally acting on the sexual tension that’s always kept him craving more.
Finn senses it too—when he brushes against Tanner’s stubbled jaw, when he inhales the scent of the T-shirt that clings to Tanner’s body like a second skin. Now that he’s more vulnerable than ever, Finn knows the time is right to take control, even if it means risking the heart and soul of their friendship. The bond they share goes beyond desire; it’s a bond of brotherhood, forged under conditions few could imagine. But once they cross that line, there will be no more secrets. No more boundaries. And no turning back.
The Farther He Runs is intended for mature audiences and includes an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

Praise for The Farther He Runs

“[Lynda] Aicher delivers an emotionally nuanced and poignant tale. . . . Aicher’s stoic, honorable Marines are exquisitely drawn, flaws and all. Deft plotting helps the author explore the very real struggles of two men in the post–‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ military, and a subplot of loss adds a painful but necessary layer to the story. This is an emotion-packed, satisfying read.”Publishers Weekly

“The chemistry and connection between the men [are] great from the start. . . . Aicher does a really nice job letting us feel the intense bonds of their friendship and their closeness, while at the same time seeing how their feelings have changed to become more romantic and sexual.”—Joyfully Jay

“This story is heart-wrenching without being over-the-top. . . . It’s sweet; it made me cry and it had me rooting for [Tanner and Finn] as they navigated the rocky path from friends to lovers. Absolutely beautiful.”—Alpha Book Club

I've been eagerly anticipating Finn's story after reading the first book in this Kick series by Lynda Aicher when Finn is still in a coma from the accident. So let me first start by telling you all that Lynda has a way with emotions, and The Farther He Runs displays that talent in spades...she's truly is a master. Like with all of her other books I've read, the connection between the two characters is the primary focus and every single page of the book further solidifies that connection. I simply adored this story about love, and friendship, and truly finding a new path in life after a devastating loss of self. I think that both Tanner and Finn needed one another to truly live, and I was so enthralled with their story that I couldn't put it down and read it in one truly was that good. You won't need to read the previous two books in this series to understand what is going on, so I say dive right in and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

This is the third in the series. I have read all three and have enjoyed all. This story has a lot of heart tugging as two military buddies deal with their lives without their third. Finn is struggling back from a coma caused by a white-water rafting accident that claimed the life of his friend and Marine buddy. Tanner comes home on leave to find out he lost a friend and almost lost another. The two spend time together trying to deal with their situations and realize their feelings for each other are just as strong. I loved how they helped each other through some tough spots, and my heart ached when Tanner had to leave on another mission. I was happy that Tanner left knowing that everyone accepted him. I received a copy of this through Netgalley, and this is my unsolicited review.

This is book # 3 in the Kick series. This book can be read as a standalone novel. For reader enjoyment and understanding, I recommend reading the series in order. Tanner & Finn go way back. As teammates, as friends, and as attraction and unrequited love took hold of them both. Tanner was supposed to be a partner in the company they own. He just never came home. Finn is shocked right out of his mind when Tanner finally does show up on his doorstep. The men who missed him have held down the fort at their company. Tanner cannot decide whether to sign up for another tour of duty, or plan his retirement. This series just keeps getting better and better. I really felt all the emotions of this story. Tanner wanting Finn....Finn in denial about how he felt for Tanner... just a sweet and sexy story from start to finish. ***This ARC copy was given in exchange for an honest review.

I've been waiting for Finn's story; I loved it! The Farther He Runs is book 3 in the Kick series but can be read as a standalone. But if you’d like more background on Finn before you read it, check out book 1 of this series, The Harder He Falls. The books in this series have all be pretty emotional reads for me but this one probably was the one that shredded me the most. Finn was seriously injured in a rafting accident and nearly died. His rehabilitation has been a very slow process and he’s frustrated by all that he’s lost, including his best friend, Chris, who didn’t survive the accident. Tanner, Chris and Finn shared a deep connection of friendship and always had each other’s back whether deployed or stateside. Although all three men are gay they were not involved with each other sexually. Tanner stayed in the Marines when Chris and Finn retired and started Kick, an extreme adventure company, but he was also a partner in the venture. Tanner returns from deployment to find his world turned upside down. Chris is dead and Finn is not the same man he was the last time Tanner saw him. The Farther He Runs is such a beautiful love story. Tanner and Finn have loved each other for a long time but neither of them has admitted it to the other. Tanner has 5 weeks of leave to spend with Finn and they escape to the place they’ve always sought refuge in when Chris was with them. Finn finally begins to heal and their relationship becomes what it was always meant to be. This is one of those books that made me feel so much and ends up being so hard for me to describe in a review. Tanner and Finn, individually, have a lot of things to overcome but they finally admit their feelings for each other and realize they are stronger together than apart. I love Ms. Aicher’s writing. She always transports me to another place which is what I love about reading a good book. This series has been one of my favorites in the M/M genre this year and I highly recommend it. A review copy was provided by the publisher via NetGalley but this did not influence my opinion or rating of the book. Reviewed for

Generally, I prefer feel good books. HEAs with only a smidge of conflict or sadness. This book had more than a smidge of sadness and angst. Still, this was a good book with interesting and well developed characters. I always find m/m romances sadder with more drama simply because gay men (and women) were persecuted greatly in the past, and still face discrimination today. This said, Tanner and Finn were dealing with a more than discrimination. Tanner and Finn are dealing with the death of their close friend Chris. In addition to mourning Chris, Finn is still healing emotionally and physically from the accident that killed Chris and Tanner is suffering from PTSD from being a Marine in extreme situations for almost 20 years. Both Tanner and Finn always had a greater than friendship type of love for each other, so it was easy to see why they would end up in a romance. It took a large chunk of the book for the romance to develop, and I found this a little annoying. At the same time, I understood why the romance couldn't jump off immediately in the book. Overall, this was a good book and I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys romance with a little bit of drama. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I am so happy to see another book in the Kick series! Linda Aicher has created a goldmine of fascinating characters in this series. Each one is so strong and sincere and just so damn real. I was so glad to read Finn's story. Finn is incredibly resilient and powerful and ultimately a force to be reckoned with. He just needed someone special to remind him of those things. Enter Tanner, Finn's brother in all the ways that matter, his protector, and his motivation. The love these two men share is so deep. They just have to find the strength to reach out to each other for what they really need... an even deeper and meaningful love. Their journey was such an incredible one and a true joy to read. I loved this book from cover to cover, and was truly sad to see it end. I would very highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a true love story. I can't wait for the next book in the series! * I was given a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

*Review copy provided by NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review* This is the third book in the KICK series and it is definitely both emotional and hot! Lynda Aicher takes you on quite a rollercoaster with these marines, brothers and best friends. Finn Kelley is recovering following emerging from a coma that was brought on by a rafting accident. He's been in rehab and is slowly getting back to life and figuring out how he goes forward. One of his two best friends, Chris, was killed in the accident, so when Tanner Dorsey, the third of the best friends/brothers finally returns home on leave, it's not only time to grieve the loss of their comrade, but also to finally take stock of the feelings he's concealed for nearly a decade. When Tanner returns, he sees the toll that the accident has taken on Finn. He's weak, both physically and mentally, and his recovery is going very slowly. Tanner has loved Finn for as long as he can remember. He's only ever openly showed his love as a best friend/brother, but there is no question that he wishes it could be more. Knowing how much his friend is struggling, he's determined to do whatever he can to help him heal. Tanner and Finn go away to get solace and to grieve for their friend. While they are away, they not only find that having someone to lean on makes the process easier, they also find that maybe they don't feel all that differently about one another. Will they be able to take the next steps and be the love that the other needs? Will Tanner be able to stick with Finn and not run back to active duty? This was a very real, raw, emotional book. It had highs and lows and it shows the struggle that people go through on a daily basis as they grieve and also as they fall in love. Falling in love can be both amazing and terrifying and we see that with these two strong willed men along the way. Kudos to Lynda Aicher for crafting such an emotional tale, but one that in the end showcases that love is always one of the strongest healers.
