In the near future, the United States has been transformed into the Unified State, an oppressive police state that keeps its citizens under constant surveillance. Poverty and crime are rampant, and the citizens live beneath a perpetual cloud of fear. Pedro Pulido has never known his country to be any other way, but his grandfather remembers a time before, and he teaches Pedro to recognize the propaganda for what it is and to think for himself. Still, Pedro is no revolutionary.
Then Pedro’s quiet town is engulfed by the country’s growing anti-government insurgency, and terrifying changes begin to occur. A mechanical soldier with artificial intelligence, Samuel, is deployed in the neighborhood and, like others of its kind, is glorified by the government as a great protector of the people.
However, it quickly becomes apparent that Samuel isn’t just keeping an eye out for insurgents. After the death of one of Pedro’s closest friends at Samuel’s hands, Pedro finds himself faced with a decision. Does he accept the status-quo or seek justice for his friend’s murder?

I have to admit that I love a book that doesn't conform to the normal predictable endings. This is a tale of a generation of youths growing up in the aftermath of American turmoil. Almost immediately you are taken on an emotional rollercoaster and just when you think your in the clear, the author pulls you back and leaves you wanting more. Robert has done a superb job on his first novel and I cannot wait to read the sequel!!!!!!!!
Robert T Corrado you are a very talented and amazing writer. Just finished your book and it was wonderful. The characters are endearing and you are drawn to them personally. The storyline was powerful and you couldn't help being drawn in anxiously awaiting the next turn of events. I ordinarily don't read anything but mysteries but found there are other means of reading enjoyment. You were able to keep the reader (this reader at least) on the edge of her seat and wanting to read on. Can't wait to read your next book. You are very talented and it is a privilege to know this author personally. Thanks!
What defines a hero? Is it the face the of power the world sees or that one determined soul who goes unnoticed, but plants the seed that changes the future of millions? Who or what is the Fifth Column? The Fifth Column by Robert Corrado has become another of those gems I have found in my TBR pile! In a future time, the United States is no more, but is replaced with a dictatorship that brooks no dissension; the government is in absolute control, the people are simply disposable tools in its monstrous machine. There is no privacy, little food and fear is a way of life. One mysterious man comes into the life of young Pedro and fuels a desire to do more than accept life as it is. Joined by his friends, they plan to take a HUGE and dangerous step in taking back a once great country and giving it back to its people. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect as I started The Fifth Column, but as each page unfolded, I was drawn in, and eventually became completely lost in a story that took the horrors of this life down to an individual level. The characters, as much as the plot were magnetic! These characters came alive. From the elderly to the young boys, their families and their attempts to enjoy what few freedoms they had as they struggled in their day-to-day lives while under the watchful eye and deadly weapons of their government at work. Robert Corrado tells his story in vivid detail, down to the last scene. His characters are well-developed and completely believable with individual personalities and quirks, from the grandfather with memories of the old days to the group of boys, who played, talked and acted like any kids you would see on down the street, until they became heroes, thanks to that mysterious man and his strong convictions and determination. For those who enjoy the battles of a dystopian world, the David vs. Goliath theme, or just an intense read, filled with darkness and tension and action scenes that jump off the page, I highly recommend The Fifth Column!
