Marissa Shrock builds a unique, intricate futuristic society where 15-year-old Vivica faces the life-changing decision to comply with the government's termination law or, with the assistance of the resistance rebels, continue her pregnancy. A very thought-provoking and intriguing story unfolds as Vivica's dilemma puts her in harm's way time and again. When even her own mother will not support her pregnancy, how can she choose to give her child life?

Marissa Shrock in her new book, “The First Principle” published by Kregel Publications introduces us to Vivica Wilkins. From the back cover: If inalienable rights begin with life itself will Viveca have the courage to defend them, no matter what it takes? In the not-too-distant future, the United Regions of America has formed. Governors hold territories instead of states, and while Washington, DC, is gone, the government has more control than ever before. For fifteen-year-old Vivica Wilkins, the daughter of a governor, this is life as usual. High school seems pretty much the same–until one day, that controlling power steps right through the door during study hall. When Vivica speaks out to defend her pregnant friend against the harsh treatment of Population Management Officer Marina Ward, she has no idea she’s sowing the seeds of a revolution in her own life. But it isn’t long before she discovers her own illegal pregnancy. Now she has to decide whether to get the mandatory abortion–or follow her heart, try to keep the baby, and possibly ruin her mother’s chances at becoming president. A rebel group called the Emancipation Warriors, who are fighting to restore freedoms once held unalienable, offer her asylum. Can Vivica trust these rebels to help her or will they bring everything crashing down around her? Accepting their help may come with consequences she isn’t ready to face. Marissa Shrock’s debut novel crafts a chilling story of what may be to come if we allow the economic and moral crises currently facing our country to change the foundations on which we built our independence–and of the difference one person can make when they choose to trust God’s lead. Life. You cannot regulate life. Yet, somehow, in the possible future the government has done just that very thing. Get ready “The First Principle” is filled with tension and many twist and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Ms. Shrock has baked Abortion, Government Control, Parental Control and corruption into this politically tense scandal thriller. Then there is the relationship between Juliet and her mother, Salvation, life and who do you follow. Ms. Shrock is highly talented and keeps the story moving at a very high level of quality. Ms. Shrock makes you care for all the characters and their journey while giving you lots to think about. This is also just plain fun and exciting as well. Don’t start this book late at night because it will cost you sleep. Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Kregel Publications. This book doesn’t hold back. Marissa tells her character’s stories like they are. But we in the mind of a teenager. A teenager that doesn’t know the Lord, so her thoughts are going to be a bit troublesome to us mothers. Vivica is a typical teen who finds out she’s pregnant. According to the law she is supposed to terminate her pregnancy and as I stated she doesn’t know Jesus so she thinks she should go along with this. But other people are speaking into her life and urging her not to do this. She begins to question everything she holds true. She’s always loved her mother, but is her mother really making the best choices? Could her mother be wrong in her policies? And then a secret is revealed to the reader that simply broke my heart. This is definitely written or the teen market and I think this could raise some good conversations with your teen. I would not let my middle schooler read this yet, the content was a bit too mature for her, I think. But it is a great book for an older child. Marissa definitely pulled me into this story and had me wondering what would happen next. Overall, a very interesting read. A copy of tis book was given to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Marissa Shrock's debut novel, The First Principle, is an exciting, well-written, dystopian thriller.  I enjoyed the non-stop action and excellent character development throughout the inspiring journey of main character, Vivica. She lives in futuristic world that is not hard to imagine with a controlling government limiting individual freedoms. Despite this very disturbing new world, the book is believable and hard to put down.  It tackles serious questions  we see Vivica struggle with her new found Christian faith in tumultous society.  Congratulations to Ms. Shrock for an outstanding first novel that will be enjoyed by both young adult and adult readers.  A sequel is a must and is  most anticipated.  I highly recommend this new ten novel.

I received a copy of THE FIRST PRINCIPLE by Marissa Schrock from Kregel Publications in exchange for an honest review. It is characterized at Christian, Futuristic Fiction. I found the novel intriguing, for I am trying my hand at my own “futuristic” novel, although mine leans more toward “dystopian.” In THE FIRST PRINCIPLE, Vivica lives in the United Regions of North America. There are many twists in this story, and the setting is vivid. You really feel as if you are a part of this futuristic world. The chapters are fast-paced, so prepare to read this in one sitting. You won’t want to pause for a break. Vivica is the governor’s daughter, and she’s faced with a tough choice: rebel or abort her baby. I truly enjoyed the way Marissa Schrock handled the delicate matter and took into account Christian principles, as well as family love. I highly recommend this book and I can see it doing well with both adults and young adults. With the publication of my own books, I’ve been pickier about covers, and I’m not sure about this one. I would have preferred something with more action – I wonder if it will attract young adults. The model, however, captures Vivica’s strengths and weaknesses.
